Council members narrow candidate list for city manager to five finalists 

Burleson City Council members have narrowed the list of candidates for city manager down to five. The candidates are Dale Cheatham, town manager for Brownsburg, Ind., and former city manager for The Colony, Texas; James Earp, assistant city manager for Kyle; Charles Ewings, assistant city manager for Longview; John Godwin, town manager for Fairview; and, Elizabeth Grindstaff, assistant city manager, San Angelo. The five candidates will be interviewed Jan. 24-25, during executive session. Those candidate interviews will not be broadcast via the streaming video on the City website. Read More

Hidden Creek closes down nine holes Monday in preparation for redesign

Hidden Creek Golf Course is getting a whole new look thanks to a redesign and realignment. The City's municipal course will close the back nine holes effective Monday, Jan. 9. That includes Holes 10-18. The front nine holes, Holes 1-9, are slated to close in mid-February. All 18 holes will reopen in the fall of 2012, barring any weather delays during the redesign. The redesign and realignment will open Hidden Creek Golf Course up for championship tournaments and qualifying events. The pro shop, range, and the restaurant will remain open. Read More

Nature hike takes off at 2 p.m. Saturday from City's Oak Valley North Park  

The Rio Bravos Master Naturalists and the City's park and recreation department will host a nature hike Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at Oak Valley North Park, 804 Parkridge Blvd. The hikes will take place on the first Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. (during the winter months - December, January and February - walks start at 2 p.m.). For more about Rio Bravos Master Naturalists, go to their website. Cathy and Jim Crocker are the contact people for the Jan. 7 hike. They will take a maximum of 20 people on the trail to point out different species of animals, vegetation and park history. Father and Daughter andValentine Dance 2011 Mother and Son Valentine dance tickets go on sale Jan. 10
Fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, reserve Saturday, Feb. 11, for the City's annual Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Valentine Dance! The event takes place 6 p.m.-9 p.m at the BRiCk. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 10 at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Pre-event tickets are $15 per couple or $25 at the door. The ticket price covers the dinner, dance, corsages and pictures. Filing for one of four seats on May 12 city council ballot starts Feb. 4
The first day to file for a place on the ballot for the election for Burleson City Council is Saturday, Feb. 4. Burleson City Hall Ballot boxwill be open 10 a.m.-noon. The last day to file is March 5 at 5 p.m. Election day is Saturday, May 12. Four seats are on the ballot. Those seats include mayor, currently held by Ken Shetter; Place 2, currently held by Rick Green; Place 4, currently held by Matt Aiken; and Place 6 (unexpired term), currently held by Larry Pool. Candidates must be at least 18 years old; a citizen of the United States; a qualified voter of the city; a resident of the city or have resided in the city for at least one year immediately preceding the date of the election; not be delinquent in the payment of taxes or other liability due to the City of Burleson; and not be otherwise disqualified from serving on the city council by any other provision of law. Frugal Mom is teaching couponing!

The BRiCk is hosting a free Couponing workshop! This is a free five-part Friday night couponing series that began Dec. 30 and ends Feb. 17. Classes are 6 p.m.-7 p.m. The class will be taught by an experienced couponer, The Frugal Mom! The class will take place in Meeting Room B. Community Blood Drive is Jan. 19
Make an appointment to donate blood at the Burleson Community Blood Drive on Thursday, Jan. 19. There are two locations and two times. Go to the American Red Cross donation appointment page to sign up. This blood drive is sponsored by the City of Burleson, Huguley Memorial American Red Cross blood drive buttonMedical Center, the Burleson Rotary Club and the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce. The first drive on Jan. 19 is at the Burleson Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave., 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; and the second drive on Jan. 19 is at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Learn five secrets to weight loss via free Monday class at the BRiCk

Do you want to learn the five secrets to permanent weight loss? The BRiCk is hosting guest speaker Carlos Munoz on Monday, Jan. 9. The free class, presented by the Foundation for Wellness Professionals, will take place 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Topics include what hormones are involved with metabolism, energy and weight loss and how to detoxify your body and prevent and eliminate the pain that prevents exercise. Beneath a marble sky'Beneath a Marble Sky' is libary group's book 

"Beneath a Marble Sky" by John Shores is the focus of the Burleson Public Library's Friday Book Discussion Group on Jan. 13. The group meets at 10:30 a.m. at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. The book unfolds in 17th century Hindustan and focuses on the building of the Taj Mahal. The reigning emperor, consumed with grief over the tragic death of his beloved wife, commissions the building of the Taj Mahal as a testament to the marvel of their love. Princess Jahanara, their daughter, recounts their tale, while sharing her own parallel tale of forbidden love with the celebrated architect of the Taj Mahal.
