Prevent crime with holiday safety tips
Burleson police officers have seen an upsurge in the number of people who are starting their cars, then leaving the vehicles unattended. That's just what a potential car thief is looking for - an unattended car with the keys in the ignition. The Transportation Code says that you may not leave a vehicle unattended without stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, and setting the parking brake if the vehicle is on a grade. Violating this section of the Transportation Code is a Class C misdemeanor. The police department's community resource officers also put together a list of holiday shopping safety tips. Read More
Red vs. Blue game 2011Fire and police help collect toys for needy children via Red vs. Blue softball game
Heart For The Kids volunteers collected enough toys to fill two sport utility vehicles and one pickup, and, lots of bicycles through the annual Red vs. Blue benefit softball game Dec. 10. Many toys and bicycles were purchased thanks to an anonymous $1,000 donation turned in at city hall. Burleson fire fighters and Burleson police officers faced off at Hidden Creek Sports Complex. Admission was one unwrapped toy. The fire department took home bragging rights by winning the first two games in the best two-out-of-three series. This is the 11th year that the two public safety departments have hosted the benefit. In previous years they have played flag football and kickball. The game is hosted by the Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 and Burleson Police Officers Association. Heart For The Kids assists children who live in the city of Burleson and those who attend Burleson schools. For more pictures, go to the Red vs. Blue 2011 benefit softball game for Heart For The Kids album on the City Facebook page.

Be cautious with candles over holidays

Burleson Fire Marshal Stacy Singleton and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) are urging residents to practice candle fire safety during the holiday season. On average, the USFA says 42 home candle fires are reported every day. More than half start when something that could burn - furniture, mattresses, bedding, curtains or decorations - are too close to the candle. In 20 percent of those candle fires, the candles are left unattended. Approximately 36 percent of home candle fires start in the bedroom. Half of home candle fires start between midnight and 6 a.m. when residents are asleep. The good news is that most candle fires are preventable. Read More
