Prisoner of war is guest speaker at 5th annual Military Veteran Tribute Nov. 5
United States Air Force Lt. Col. Jerry A. Singleton of Burleson will be the guest speaker at the Saturday, Nov. 5, Military Veteran Tribute. Singleton was shot down Nov. 6, 1965, while flying a rescue mission over North Vietnam. He evaded the enemy for five days before he was captured by the North Vietnamese. Singleton was held as a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton for more than seven years before his release Feb. 12, 1973. Singleton, all POWs and those soldiers missing in action will be honored at 2 p.m. at the City's fifth annual tribute at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St. Also being honored is the family of Army PFC Jesse W. Dietrich. Dietrich, 20, of Venus died in action in Afghanistan in August. Read More |
City hosts Freedom Walk Nov. 5
The City's "Be Burleson. Be Safe. Be Well. Be Healthy" committee is hosting a Freedom Walk starting at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, to coincide with the City's 5th annual Military Veteran Tribute. The two-mile walk will start at Burleson City Hall, 141 W. Renfro St., and end at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St., in time for the 2 p.m. start of the Military Veteran Tribute. The first 100 Freedom Walk participants will receive free commemorative t-shirts. There is no charge to participate in the walk. Read More |
Change your clock, change your battery
When the daylight saving time falls back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, residents are reminded to not only change the time on all clocks, but also to change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The Burleson Fire Marshal's office is joining with the Energizer Bunny Brigade and asking everyone to take the pledge on Energizer's "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" Facebook page. There's something in it for Facebook fans too. Through the "Facebook event that could save your life," fans could win a Fire Safety Home Makeover which includes a fire safety inspection and $5,000 cash towards recommended fire safety improvements. Emergency Alert System will be tested nationwide Wednesday, Nov. 9
It's only a test. Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. marks the first time that the Emergency Alert System has been tested nationwide at the same time. The test will be broadcast over all TV stations, radio stations, and video providers, including cable and satellite operators. The Nov. 9 test is expected to last approximately three minutes. It will interrupt programming on all channels from all service providers. The nationwide test does not include the City of Burleson's outdoor warning siren system or the City's Connect-CTY emergency phone notification. The Nov. 9 test will not include mobile communication devices. Only call 911 if you have an actual emergency that requires the response of the police, firefighters or emergency medical services. Get rid of household hazardous waste and old electronics during Nov. 12 event
The City of Burleson is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste collection and Electronic Recycling event on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the City's old service center at 133 N. Main St. The event is 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the City of Fort Worth's Crud Cruiser is full. Only household hazardous waste from Burleson residents will be accepted. Bring a water or solid waste bill as proof of residency. There will be a fee for TVs, computer hard drive erasing, CRT computer monitors, and air conditioning unit Freon disposal. All other electronic items may be dropped off free of charge. Read More |
Deadline to order 'Give Cancer the Axe' hoodies is Nov. 11
The Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 will be taking orders until Friday, Nov. 11, for the "Give Cancer the Axe" hoodies. The hoodies will be ready for pick up at Fire Station #1 before Thanksgiving. The hoodies are $25 and must be prepaid. A new shipment of the black 2011 shirts came in last week. T-shirts are $20 and they have all sizes, from youth to adult. There are still some pink 2009 shirts and those are $10. Those sizes are limited. Don't miss Soccer Sparks in December!
If your youngster is interested in soccer, mark your calendar for Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. The BRiCk will be hosting free soccer demonstration classes called Soccer Sparks. Children 4-5 years old participate 4:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. and children 6-8 years old participate 5:15 p.m.-6 p.m. The goal is to spark a passion for the game as well as teach children sound principles and techniques. Monthly (indoor) sessions will start in January. Those sessions will include dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork. For more, call the BRiCk at 817-426-9104. |
Chad Hennings is guest speaker for Nov. 15 Character Awards Luncheon The Burleson Character Council is hosting the 2011 Burleson Character Awards Luncheon Tuesday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m., at SPJST. Chad Hennings, former Air Force fighter pilot who is best known for his nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, is the guest speaker. Hennings is the founder of Wingmen and the author of "Rules of Engagement." Tickets are $20 if purchased before Nov. 15, or $25 at the door. Sign up online. The City, Burleson Independent School District, Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce and Burleson Ministerial Alliance promote and recognize outstanding character. Trick-or-treaters converged on Old Town Oct. 29 for 4th annual Boo Bash
The streets of Old Town Burleson were full of trick-or-treaters Oct. 29! The crowd was estimated at 10,000 in two hours. Children from birth to 12 years old enjoyed free trick-or-treating, free pumpkins to decorate, entertainment, a Halloween story read by Mayor Ken Shetter and a parade of costumes across the stage. Time change triggers cleaning of gravesites at Burleson Memorial Park
The clocks fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, which means it is also time for the biannual cleanup of Burleson Memorial Park. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker will be removed from gravesites Nov. 7-13. The removal includes fresh or artificial flowers and other items that are hanging, sitting or lying on the gravesite. Read More |
Santa, elves, host Breakfast with Santa Santa and his elves will host Breakfast with Santa, 7 a.m.-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. The elves will be up early flipping pancakes, cooking sausage and making orange juice and coffee. Santa will be in the Winter Wonderland until 11 a.m. to hear Christmas wishes. Bring your camera to take pictures with Santa. Children can also visit Santa's workshop to make holiday crafts. Tickets are $3 for children/$4 for adults in advance at the BRiCk, 550 N.W.
