Military veterans' service and sacrifices will be honored at Nov. 5 tribute
The service and sacrifices of military veterans will be honored Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. when the City of Burleson hosts the fifth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park at Renfro Square. The theme this year focuses on the Prisoners Of War and those Missing In Action. A POW/MIA monument will be unveiled and dedicated. The City's "Be Burleson. Be Safe. Be Well. Be Healthy" committee is hosting a Freedom Walk starting at 12:45 p.m. That walk will start at city hall, 141 W. Renfro St., and end at Veterans Memorial Park in time for the tribute. Those walkers who start and finish the walk will receive a free Freedom Walk t-shirt. Read More |
Recycle household hazardous waste and electronics at City's Nov. 12 event
The City of Burleson is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste collection and Electronic Recycling event on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the City's old service center at 133 N. Main St. The event will take place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the City of Fort Worth's Crud Cruiser is full. Only household hazardous waste from Burleson residents will be accepted. Bring a water or solid waste bill as proof of residency. E-Waste Collections is coordinating the electronic recycling. There will be a fee for TVs ($10-$30, depending on the size and if there is a wooden console); computer hard drive erasing ($10); CRT computer monitors ($5), and air conditioning unit Freon disposal ($15). All other electronic items may be dropped off free of charge. Read More |
Friends of the Library are polling patrons about City's library services
What do you think of the Burleson Public Library? The Friends of the Library want to know! Members of the group will be at the library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave., today, Oct. 14, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2 p.m.-6 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 20, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The Friends want to know how you think the library is doing now and what services or programs could be added. The survey is less than 10 questions long and will take less than 15 minutes to complete. Read More |
Police bolster Citizens On Patrol volunteer force
More than 18 graduates of the Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy signed up for more training and are now certified as members of the department's Citizens On Patrol program. Training for the COPs program includes a 16-hour certification course, four-hour orientation and riding out with a patrol officer. COPs recruits must be at least 21 and a graduate of the department's Citizens Police Academy (36-hour course). COPs undergo a criminal background check before they are trained by members of the police department. Read More |
Chad Hennings is guest speaker for annual Character Awards Luncheon
The Burleson Character Council is hosting the 2011 Burleson Character Awards Luncheon Tuesday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m., at SPJST. Chad Hennings, former Air Force fighter pilot who is best known for his nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, is the guest speaker. Hennings is the founder of Wingmen and the author of "Rules of Engagement." Tickets are $15 if purchased by Nov. 1. Sign up online at 2011 Burleson Character Luncheon. The Character Council is an effort of the City of Burleson, Burleson Independent School District, Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce and Burleson Ministerial Alliance to promote and recognize outstanding character. The luncheon includes the presentation of the winners of the annual essay contest, the Byron Black Character Award and an award to a special needs student who shows outstanding character. Free miniature pumpkins go to first 1,000 at Burleson Old Town Boo Bash Oct. 29
Free miniature pumpkins donated by City Market will be available for the first 1,000 trick-or-treaters at the Burleson Old Town Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 29. Children, birth to 12 years old, can decorate their pumpkin with markers or paint, then take it home. Those who aren't in the first 1,000 will get plastic pumpkins that can also be decorated. The pumpkin patch will be set up next to the #330 Rail Car near the corner of Ellison and Wilson streets. Read More |
Burleson Police promote National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 16-22
Do you know what the greatest threat to today's youth is? Vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among teens, killing nearly 4,000 teenagers, 16 -20 years old, in traffic-related crashes each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Burleson Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies across the nation in promoting National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 16-22. The week was established by Congress in 2007 to focus attention on the nation's epidemic of teen car crashes and to find solutions to lower teen drivers' fatal crash risks. Read More |

Possession of K-2 and misuse of social media are addressed in new state laws
The Texas legislature enacted new criminal procedure, penal code and transportation code laws that went into effect in September 2011. Those laws include new penalties for possession of K-2, an amendment to the "Move Over Law" that includes tow trucks, making misuse of social media in an attempt to harm someone an offense, and adding missing persons with intellectual disabilities to the list of reasons to activate the Amber Alert.
