Celebrate Burleson's founding Saturday
The Silver Rail band - classic rock, oldies, country, blues and funk - is the headline entertainment Saturday, Oct. 8, at the 19th annual Founders Day celebration in Old Town Burleson. Silver Rail is on the City stage for 90 minutes, starting at 4 p.m. The 2011 event is slated for 9 a.m.-6 p.m., in Old Town. The fun will take place on Ellison Street and stretch between Johnson Avenue and the railroad tracks (Main Street). Founders Day is hosted by the City of Burleson and the Burleson Heritage Foundation. Mock gunfights and great food, arts and crafts, carnival rides and entertainment will mark the celebration of the founding of Burleson, Texas. There may even be a costume parade to kick off the festival. Burleson was founded Oct. 10, 1881, and incorporated in 1912. The first Founders Day festival was in 1993. Read More |
Keep Burleson Beautiful honored by state with Gold Star Status
Keep Burleson Beautiful (KBB) was tapped as one of 55 Texas communities to be honored with Gold Star Status by Keep Texas Beautiful. Bianca Chafin, the City's environmental programs specialist/KBB executive director and Donna Hollowell, president of KBB, accepted the honor from Cathie Gail, executive director of Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB). The honor was announced during the 44th annual conference. Keep Texas Beautiful also recognized Bianca Chafin with second place in the Individual Leadership Award category. This is a once in a lifetime award that recognizes individuals who provide leadership in improving and enhancing Texas' environment. KTB, a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement organization, has more than 360 affiliates. Gold Star recognition is the highest status any community affiliate can achieve. Burleson Police arrest man Oct. 4 for three robberies in less than two weeks
A 23-year-old Burleson man believed to be responsible for three robberies, two at the same business, in Burleson has been apprehended. Burleson Police arrested Christopher Aaron Rhoades at 9:12 a.m. on Oct. 4 at the Exxon Tigermart on Wilshire Boulevard for aggravated robbery. A few minutes earlier, Rhoades allegedly robbed K-Jim's convenience store on Alsbury Boulevard. Rhoades was driving on Wilshire Tuesday morning when he saw the officer, then pulled into the Tigermart parking lot. The officer recognized the license plate on the Durango as the one given in the description of the vehicle used in the Oct. 4 robbery. The officer turned around and apprehended the suspect without incident. Rhoades is connected to a Sept. 21 aggravated robbery at Advance America Cash Advance and a Sept. 23 aggravated robbery at K-Jim's. Read More |
Welcome to City of Burleson committee, board and commission members
Burleson City Council members approved the appointments to the City's boards and commissions at the Sept. 19 meeting. The Appointments Committee - Mayor Ken Shetter and council members Larry Pool and Matt Aiken - reviewed the applications and made recommendations to the full council. Free miniature pumpkins go to first 1,000 at Burleson Old Town Boo Bash Oct. 29
Free miniature pumpkins donated by City Market will be available for the first 1,000 trick-or-treaters at the Burleson Old Town Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 29. Children, birth to 12 years old, can decorate their pumpkin with markers or paint, then take it home. Those who aren't in the first 1,000 will get plastic pumpkins that can also be decorated. The pumpkin patch will be set up next to the #330 Rail Car near the corner of Ellison and Wilson streets. Read More |
Let's play ball - adult Co-Ed Volleyball and adult Mini-Fall Softball
Let's play ball! Co-Ed Volleyball started Oct. 3 at the BRiCk and Mini-Fall Softball is slated to start Oct. 10 at Hidden Creek Softball Complex. Co-Ed Volleyball is for 18 and older and is played on Monday nights, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Volleyball is six versus six with at least three women on the court at all times. There will be six-eight games with a championship tournament at the end of the season. Mini-Fall Softball is played Monday-Thursday. Honor a veteran with a brick
Local military veterans can still be immortalized with a brick at Burleson Veterans Memorial Park in Renfro Square. Approximately 1,240 bricks have been sold, with room for 100 more. Stop by the Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave., and request a Brick for Veterans order form, or go to the Bricks for Veterans page on the City website. The brick includes the name of the veteran, branch of service, and the name of the conflicts, if any. An engraved seal representing that veteran's branch of service is also included. Interactive House simplifies permit process for residential development
Are you adding a swimming pool/spa, storage building, retaining wall, landscape irrigation or deck/patio to your residential property? Finding out what the City requires to do this and more just got easier. An Interactive House for Residential Development information page is now live on the City website. Everything that you can think of to add or change at your home is included on the interactive house. All you have to do is click on the specific item, such as storage building, and you will be linked to a page that tells you what you need to submit in order to get a building permit, and also has links to all of the necessary forms and regulations. Have you made a pledge to get more fit through running or walking? Join the BRiCk's Runners Club and you'll not only receive a training schedule, but you can participate in two group runs per week. You will be encouraged to sign up for fun runs and work toward the Dallas White Rock Marathon, Half Marathon or 5-Person Relay on Dec. 4. The fee is $10 for BRiCk members or $15 for non-members. Click on the meeting date, then click on the item you are interested in. There is also a tab for streaming video of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Official minutes of council and commission meetings and workshops and work sessions are not posted on the City website until the council/commission members have approved those minutes at their next scheduled meeting. |
