Written warning is followed by minimum fines of $250-$750 for violating watering restrictions
If you knowingly permit the use of water in violation of the Stage 1 Water Restrictions enacted on Aug. 29, there will be consequences. According to Ordinance B-789-09, which is part of the City's 2009 Drought Contingency Plan, it is a violation if residents and businesses use City water in a way that has been prohibited by the plan or the amount of water used exceeds what is allowed. The first offense for someone who violates, disobeys, omits, neglects or refuses to comply is a written warning. The second offense will result in a minimum fine of $250. By the third offense, the fine jumps to a minimum of $500. For subsequent offenses, the fine is a minimum of $750. Each day water restrictions are violated counts as a new violation. Once the number exceeds three, the City may discontinue water services, then the owner has to pay a reconnection fee. The fines outlined in the ordinance do not include court costs, which are an additional $64, per fine. Read More |
Police promote Child Passenger Safety The Burleson Police Department is joining with other law enforcement agencies in Texas to promote Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 18-24. The week is hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and supported by Safe Kids USA, a nationwide network of organizations working to prevent unintentional childhood injury. According to TxDOT, three out of four child passenger safety seats are incorrectly installed. Burleson's public safety officers are not certified to do child safety seat checks, but those checks can be done through Safe Kids. The Texas Child Restraint Law requires children younger than 8 years old or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to be in child restraint seats. Read More |

City, TxDOT host meeting Sept. 27 to reveal proposed changes to Hwy. 174
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is in the design stage of a construction project to add medians to Hwy. 174, from I-35W to John Jones Drive. Raised concrete medians would replace the center turn lane. The project is scheduled for construction in 2012. The City and TxDOT are hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., at Burleson City Hall, 141 W. Renfro St. TxDOT will unveil the proposed design plans and listen to input from the public. The median is fully funded by the Federal Highway Administration and TxDOT. Possible landscaping and irrigation of those medians would be funded by the City. For more information, go to the video of the Aug. 15 city council meeting and click on Item 4A. |
