IESI truckThere will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Labor Day
Sept. 5 could be a great day to golf! Hidden Creek Golf Course will be open, charging holiday rates, on Labor Day. The hours are 6 a.m.-7:30 p.m. (weekend hours). All other City facilities will be closed in observance of Labor Day. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Monday, Sept. 5. The outdoor pool at the BRiCk closed for the season Aug. 21. The indoor pool, as well as the BRiCk, will be closed on Labor Day. The city council meeting scheduled for Sept. 5 will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 6.  The work session is at 5:30 p.m. and the general meeting is at 7 p.m. at city hall. Read More

There are exceptions to the recently enacted Stage 1 Water Restrictions 

According to the City of Burleson's drought contingency plan as well as the Tarrant Regional Water District plan, there are exceptions to the Stage 1 Water Restrictions that were enacted Aug. 29. Watering by hand is allowed at any time. Foundations may be watered up to two hours on any day by soaker hose, or drip irrigation system placed within 24 inches of the foundation. The drip irrigation system can not produce a spray of water above the ground. Newly installed shrubs (first year) and trees (first two years) may be watered up to two hours on any day by handheld hose, drip irrigation, a soaker hose or tree bubbler. Tree watering is limited to an area not to exceed the drip line of the tree. Read More

Basic Citizens Police Academy 2011More than 40 walked the walk in Burleson's 10-week Citizens Police Academy programs

More than 40 people devoted 10 weeks of their summer to learning more about law enforcement. Thirty-one graduated from the Burleson Police Department's Basic Citizens Police Academy and 10 graduated from the Advanced Citizens Police Academy during a ceremony Aug. 18 at Burleson City Hall. The free Citizens Police Academy program is coordinated by Sgt. Brian O'Heren who is assisted by Officer Jae Berg. The free academy consists of one three-hour class each week. Read More

Sept. 27 open house will lay out plans for proposed medians on Hwy. 174

Constructing medians on Hwy. 174 from I-35W to John Jones Drive in Burleson has the support of City staff and city council. Does it have the community's support? The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the City will host an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at city hall (141 W. Renfro St.). The project is scheduled for construction in 2012. The project would remove and replace the aging roadway surface (milling, overlay and striping) and improve safety by constructing a raised center median in place of the two way continuous left turn lane. TxDOT personnel will have maps, drawings, and other information about the project at the open house to show the location and proposed route. Read More

Join the fun at the 19th annualFounders Day 2010 Founders Day on Oct. 8 

Mock gunfights and great food, arts and crafts, carnival rides and entertainment will all mark the 19th celebration of the founding of Burleson, Texas. The 2011 event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 8, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., in Old Town. The fun will take place on Ellison Street and stretch between Johnson Avenue and the railroad tracks. Founders Day is hosted by the City of Burleson and the Burleson Heritage Foundation. For more about the festivities, call David McDowell at 817-426-9112. Register for Fall Softball by Sept. 12! 

Registration for the Fall Softball 2011 season started Aug. 15 and continues through Sept. 12. League play begins Sept. 19. There is a $300 fee per team. Registration is limited to the first nine teams in each league. Games are Monday-Thursday at Hidden Creek Sports Complex. All registration takes place at The BRiCk, 550 N.W. Fall leaves 2010Sept. 9 is the deadline for the photo calendar contest

The deadline for the Burleson Calendar Photo Contest sponsored by Keep Burleson Beautiful and the City of Burleson has been extended to Sept. 9. There is only one change to the rules. There is no limit on the number of photographs a person may enter. The categories include people, pets, places, nature, recreation, history and culture/lifestyles. Photographers are encouraged to submit pictures that represent the different seasons (especially fall/winter) as well as nature and landscapes. 'Drink, Drive, Go To Jail' Labor Day holiday enforcement continues

A driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrest and conviction in Texas can cost $17,000 or more with fees for towing the car, gavelimpounding the car, bail, attorney fees, court costs, hearing and fees to regain and retain the driver's license, DWI fine, probation costs, fees for extended proof of insurance, plus insurance rate hikes. Habitual DWI offenders can face two-10 years in prison. Aug. 19-Sept. 5 (Labor Day) is the 'Drink, Drive, Go to Jail' enforcement period, statewide. Burleson Police have a no refusal policy (officers get a warrant for a sample of the driver's blood) for those suspected of drunk driving. In Texas, the legal limit is .08. Read More

Six friends = co-ed volleyball team 

Grab six friends (three women and three men) for the Co-ed Volleyball League that starts Oct. 3. The last day to register is Sept. 23. Participants must be 18 years old. The fee is $150 per team. Games are Mondays, starting at 6 p.m. There will be 6-8 games with a championship tournament to round out the season. Call the BRiCk at 817-426-9104 for more information.

The Monday Book Discussion Group will meet Sept. 19, 6:30 p.m., at the Burleson Public Library to talk about "The Three Weissmanns of Westport" by Cathleen Schine. The 'three' are Betty Weissmann, recently divorced, and her two middle-aged daughters, Miranda and Annie. They move in to a beach cottage in Connecticut, and then the fun begins. Final vote on the City's budget and property tax rate is set for Sept. 6 

Burleson city council members are slated to vote on the final reading and adoption of the 2011-2012 annual operating budget and the 2011 property tax rate ($0.6900), establish the rates to be charged for water and wastewater service, and adopt the fiscal year 2011-2012 City fee schedule at the Tuesday, Sept. 6, meeting. Council will also consider a resolution endorsing the City's five year plan. The full agenda of the Sept. 6 meeting will be posted on the City website by 5 p.m. today.
