Photo from National Night Out 2011Neighbors turned out Tuesday for National Night Out block parties

More than a dozen neighborhoods took to the streets Tuesday night with cookouts and block parties to celebrate National Night Out. Police officers, firefighters, the fire marshal's office, Mayor's Youth Council, Target, and HEB stopped by the parties between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. For more pictures, go to the National Night Out 2011 album on the City of Burleson Facebook page.

Reduce use of electricity during peak hours; report outages to provider
ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) has asked consumers to reduce their use of electricity during peak hours, 3 p.m.-7 p.m. ERCOT's emergency procedures include a Power Watch, Power Warning and Power Emergency. In a Power Emergency, ERCOT instructs utilities to reduce demand by conducting temporary outages at the local level.  The controlled temporary interruptions of electrical service - or rotating outages - typically last 15-45 minutes before being rotated to a different neighborhood. Go to the ERCOT website for the news release. If you have a power outage, report that to the provider listed on your electric bill. The number to report an outage to Oncor is 1-888-313-4747. Keep the Easy ID number that is listed on your electric bill handy because if you use a cell phone to call in an outage, the system will not recognize cell phones. Oncor will respond to the critical areas first. Don't assume that someone else has reported the outage. Go to the Oncor website.

Give the sprinkler systems a rest!Photo of the Lawn Whisperer
Give the sprinklers a rest! Since 2009 the City has prohibited the watering (via sprinklers) of lawns and landscapes, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., for residential and commercial customers. Why? Up to 30 percent of the water sprayed on lawns during the heat of the day can be lost to evaporation and, watering the lawn accounts for half or more of all the water used at home. Apply just an inch of water to your lawn once a week during the summer. Run sprinkler zones in shorter bursts, with one hour between watering cycles. That will give the water time to soak in to the clay soil instead of running off. Learn more about water conseration by going to the Tips &  Techniques page under Water Conservation and click on City Videos. There are nine videos from the Lawn Whisperer ready for your viewing!
