Unofficial city council election results will be posted on the City website Saturday night Early voting for the May 14 Burleson City Council election drew 589 voters. Election Day is 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday at city hall, 141 W. Renfro St. Four of the seven city council seats are on the ballot. All three incumbents filed for re-election. The Place 6 incumbent resigned in February but is serving until his successor is sworn in. Unofficial results will be posted on the City website Saturday night. The votes will be canvassed during a special called city council meeting May 18. The candidates who receive more than 50 percent of the vote will be sworn in to office at the June 6 council meeting. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote for a council seat, then a runoff election is required between the top two vote getters for each seat. Recycle your household hazardous waste and old electronics May 14
The City is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Recycling event May 14, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., at the City's old service center, 133 N. Main St. Household hazardous waste is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the Crud Cruiser is full. Only household hazardous waste from Burleson residents will be accepted. Bring a water or solid waste bill as proof of residency. Burleson residency is not required for electronic recycling. Electronic material from homes and businesses will be accepted. There will be a fee for some electronics. Read More |
Police Open House includes ceremony by honor guard
The Burleson City Council proclaimed the week of May 15-21 as National Police Week. To commemorate that week, the police department will host an open house May 17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. The department's honor guard will host the opening ceremony. The Burleson Lions Club will be offering free hot dogs and soft drinks. Open House will feature displays by the SWAT team, crisis negotiators, Citizens Police Academy, Citizens On Patrol, traffic unit, Burleson Police Officers Association, school resource officers, telecommunicators and community services. Fingerprinting for children will be offered. Parents receive two ID cards and a file copy. Read More |
Construction agreement approved for City's first fully accessible playground Burleson City Council members approved an agreement with Northstar Construction, Inc. for construction of improvements at Burleson Meadows Park. This will be the City's first fully accessible playground. It is located at the intersection of McAlister Road and Scarlett Sage Parkway. The playground equipment allows children of all abilities to access and use it equally. The play surface of the equipment is a mixture of a rubberized material and engineered wood fiber to aid in mobility. The playground equipment was purchased by separate agreement and is ready to be installed. Read More |
Re-organized Burleson Police Explorers Post #4911 makes a good impression
The 21 members of Burleson Police Explorer Post #4911 are making a good impression on the community. Since the post re-organized last fall, the Explorers have worked Boo Bash, Relay For Life and Cinco de Mayo. They will also participate in the National Police Week Open House May 17. The students, who range in age from 15 to 18, are part of a program that includes training, competition, service and practical experiences. Explorer leaders are Post Capt. Garrett Kirkpatrick; Scott Jones, lieutenant; and Andy Williams and Jordan Hopkins, Post sergeants. Read More |
Arson Awareness Week promotes Neighborhood Watch groups
Residents can work together to extinguish serial arson through Neighborhood Watch programs. That was the theme of the 2011 Arson Awareness Week - "Working Together to Extinguish Serial Arson." Serial arson is defined as an offense committed by fire setters who set three or more fires with a significant cooling off period between the fires. In Burleson, there have been no reported arsons since Oct. 1, 2010. The Burleson fire marshal and inspector/investigator work with the fire and police departments on arsons. The next step is to include the community by working with existing Neighborhood Watch groups. Read More |
Josh Weathers & the True Endeavors bring 'rock-n-soul high energy' to Old Town June 10
Welcome Josh Weathers & the True Endeavors to the Hot Sounds of Summer concert stage Friday, June 10! The self-described Texas "rock-n-soul infused high energy 5-piece powerhouse" band from Fort Worth includes rhythm and blues, funk, and rock and soul performed with a guitar, drums and saxophones. The Friday night show on the City stage at the corner of Ellison and Wilson streets (124 W. Ellison St.) is a free 90-minute celebration. All you have to bring is your blanket or chair for the 7:30 p.m. start. Read More |
Your pledge to lose or maintain weight helps needy families via Challenge
Make that pledge to lose weight or maintain your current weight and to also provide food for the needy via the Biggest Loser's Pound For Pound Challenge! The deadline is May 31. You don't have to lose the weight by May 31. You just have to pledge a certain number of pounds and Feeding America will receive the equivalent of one pound of food for every pound you pledge to lose. The staff at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) created the Burleson Recreation Center Pound For Pound Challenge team. As of May 9, a total of 34 people joined the team and made the pledge to the tune of 539 pounds. The original goal of the team was to pledge to lose 500 pounds. The staff wants to up the ante to 1,000 pounds. Read More |
