Get your seedlings at the April 15 ArborPhoto of Arbor Day 2010 Day ceremony

The City's parks and recreation department and the neighborhood services department as well as Keep Burleson Beautiful will host the City's annual Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 15, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at Chisenhall Fields at 500 W. Hidden Creek Pkwy. City staff will distribute tree seedlings - live oak, red oak and bald cypress - on a first-come, first-served basis. For more, call 817-426-9291.

Create healthy snacks for your kids!  

The BRiCk is hosting a free one-hour course on healthy snacks for kids at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Texas Health Harris Methodist Outpatient Center in Burleson and H-E-B Grocery are teaming up with the City to teach how to cook healthy by using nutritious food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. The class is one part lecture and one part cooking. The featured speaker is registered dietitian Amy Goodson. Seating is limited, so call THR at 1-877-THR-Well (1-877-847-9355). Keep Burleson Beautiful and the City encourage you to get involved in Burleson's Great American Cleanup Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off. Volunteer to join the cleanup event on Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.  Volunteers will remove litter and debris from retail corridors and residential drainage channels. Participants will be treated to a free lunch and prize giveaways at Warren Park, on Johnson Avenue, following the cleanup. To sign up as a volunteer and get your site assignment, call Environmental Programs Specialist Bianca Chafin at 817-426-9842 by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. Read more

April 7 public meeting will address transit service and station design 

A public meeting to discuss transit service and station design concepts for the Burleson Transit Oriented Development (TOD) study is April 7, 6:30 p.m., at Burleson City Hall. This is the second public meeting hosted by the City, North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority. Bus service, commuter rail, pedestrian and bicycle access are all in the plans for the TOD, which is a 560-acre area straddling the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. The transit station would be located at the intersection of the future Alsbury Boulevard and Hulen Street. The proposed W-4 rail corridor runs from downtown Fort Worth through Burleson and ends in Cleburne. Read more.

Registration for 2011 Summer Track starts today; practices start May 17 

Registration for the 2011 TAAF Summer Track starts today, April 1. Meets will be every Saturday, beginning in June. This is for children, 4-18 years old. Field events include shot put, discus, long jump, high jump, pole vault, and triple jump. Running events include sprint, distance, hurdles and relays. Practices will be at Hughes Middle School on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., starting May 17. For more, see the flyer on the City website; call Paula Benjamin at 817-295-6611; or e-mail her.

Mayor's Book Club features acclaimed western novelist Elmer KeltonPhoto of Elmer Kelton

Acclaimed author, Texan Elmer Kelton, has been gone since August 2009, but he is not forgotten. The 2011 Mayor's Book Club spotlight is on his book, The Time It Never Rained. The Mayor's Book Club event is April 12, 7 p.m., at Hill College of Burleson. Talking about Kelton will be Dr. Judy Alter and Dr. James Ward Lee.  Alter and Lee recently edited a book, Elmer Kelton: Memories and Essays. Copies of that book will be available April 12. The hour-long lecture will be followed by a reception.  Door prizes will be awarded after the presentation. Read more

City facilities will close for Good Friday; trash and recycling will be collected 

Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Friday, April 22, but City facilities will be closed in observance of Good Friday. Hidden Creek Golf Course and the pro shop will be open. The BRiCk will be closed on Friday, then open for regular hours the remainder of the weekend. The animal shelter will be open on Saturday. The library will be closed Friday-Sunday. Friends of the Library host annual book sale April 15-16 at the library

The Friends of the Library will host the annual Book Sale on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, at the Burleson Public Library. Friday's hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday's hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The sale will include donated books - paperbacks, hardbacks, books on tape - and movies on DVD and VHS. The selection will include every genre - non-fiction, fiction, history, romance and biographies. If you have books to donate, please call the library at 817-426-9210 or stop by 248 S.W. Johnson Ave.

Learn more about health websites through April 14 Medical Literacy event

The City's Be Burleson safety, wellness and health initiative is hosting a Medical Literacy event April 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center. This event is for residents of all ages. Attendees will learn more about health websites. The program is hosted through the efforts of the North Texas Library Partners' Libraries for Literacy program and University of North Texas Health Science Center outreach program. The senior center is located at 216 S.W. Johnson Ave.

Ballot boxRegister to vote by April 14

If you are a resident of the city of Burleson, are over 18 years of age, and registered to vote, you may vote in the May 14, 2011, Burleson City Council election. The deadline to register is Thursday, April 14. Voter registration cards are available at Burleson City Hall (141 W. Renfro St.) and the Burleson Public Library (248 S.W. Johnson Ave.) as well as through election offices in Tarrant County and Johnson County. The May 14 ballot includes four of the seven seats on the Burleson City Council. Three of the four races are contested. There is a four-way race for the unexpired term for Place 6. Read more

Deadline to nominate students for Mayor's Youth Council is April 4

Nominations are being accepted for the Mayor's Youth Council. Youth must be 13-19 years old by June 1, 2011; live in Burleson or Burleson's extra-territorial jurisdiction; and show leadership qualities within the community. Nominations are due to city hall by April 4. Nominated students must submit a questionnaire by April 11. For more information call Kellye Cunningham, assistant to the city manager, at 817-426-9682.
