What are the laws concerning arrest, search and seizure? What are the different levels of use of force? How is evidence collected and stored? Find out those answers, and more, by signing up for the Burleson Police Department's annual Citizens Police Academy.  The free classes will take place 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., every Thursday, June 9- Aug. 11. The graduation ceremony is Aug. 18. The class size is limited to 25. Applications are available at the police department (225 W. Renfro St.), city hall (141 W. Renfro St.), and on the City website. Thoroughfares and mobility are focus of April 14 open house at city hall 

The City of Burleson will host an open house for the citywide Mobility and Thoroughfare Development Plan Update at Burleson City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. This plan is currently under design. The open house is a come-and-go event. Large maps of the current roadway system will be on display. Attendees will be encouraged to pinpoint the areas that they believe are transportation issues. The focus of the plan is on multi-model transportation, safe and inviting pedestrian and bike travel, and public transit options. If you have an interest in traffic, bike paths or other transportation ideas, be sure to mark your calendar. Read more

Two store clerks arrested in March 9 alcohol sales sting operation

Two store clerks were arrested for sale of alcohol to a minor during an alcohol sting operation March 9.  The Burleson Police Department, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and a police explorer who is a minor visited 15 Johnson County businesses. A sales clerk at Tiger Farms Market and a sales clerk at Bennett's Beer and Wine were arrested. Stores that did not sell to the explorer include Elk Food Mart, Big Willy's Junction, Raceway, DJ's Corner Food Store (Valero), Burleson Stop (Glad Mart), Walgreens, Walmart, HEB, QuikTrip (both Burleson locations), CVS Pharmacy (both locations), and City Market. Ballot boxRegister to vote by April 14

If you are a resident of the city of Burleson, are over 18 years of age, and registered to vote, you may vote in the May 14, 2011, Burleson City Council election. The deadline to register is Thursday, April 14. Voter registration cards are available at Burleson City Hall (141 W. Renfro St.) and the Burleson Public Library (248 S.W. Johnson Ave.) as well as through election offices in Tarrant County and Johnson County. The May 14 ballot includes four of the seven seats on the Burleson City Council. Three of the four races are contested. There is a four-way race for the unexpired term for Place 6. Read more
Pledge some pounds in the Biggest Loser Pound for Pound Challenge

Have you taken the Biggest Loser's Pound For Pound Challenge? The staff at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) created the Burleson Recreation Center Pound For Pound Challenge team. As of March 21, a total of 31 people joined the team and made the pledge to the tune of 499 pounds. At least one team member has pledged to lose 20 pounds. The BRiCk's goal was a pledge of 500 pounds. With only one pound to go and the deadline still two months away, the staff has upped the goal to 1,000 pounds. You choose the amount of your pledge and Feeding America will receive the equivalent of one pound of food for every pound you pledge to lose. Read more

Sign up for  Summer Fun Camp at thePhoto of Rock Wall BRiCk, June 6-Aug. 19

Check out the Summer Fun Camp at the BRiCk! There are 11 one-week sessions starting June 6. The camps are geared toward children 6-12 years old. One-day field trips to the Stockyards, Fort Worth Zoo, Splash Station, Museum of Science and History, NRH20, bowling, Main Event and roller skating are included. Campers will participate in group games, arts and crafts, swimming, rock climbing, and team building events. Rainfall dips below historical averages 

According to statistics kept by the City's facilities maintenance department, the historical rainfall average from January through March is 7.08 inches. In that time period for 2011, only 2.02 inches have fallen so far. The historical rainfall average for October thru March is 15.87. From October 2010 to March 2011, the city has only seen 6.5 inches of rain. That is 9.37 inches below the average. The watering of lawns and landscapes using irrigation systems (watering with sprinklers) in the city is prohibited for both residential and commercial water customers, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. year round unless you are using a hand-held hose or soaker hose (drip system). Learn more about health websites through April 14 Medical Literacy event

The City's Be Burleson safety, wellness and health initiative is hosting a Medical Literacy event April 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center. This event is for residents of all ages. Attendees will learn more about health websites. The program is hosted through the efforts of the North Texas Library Partners' Libraries for Literacy program and University of North Texas Health Science Center outreach program. The senior center is located at 216 S.W. Johnson Ave.

Grab your children, camera and Easter baskets and join the City in the annual Bunny Daze extravaganza at the BRiCk at Bartlett Park. This is a free event sponsored by the City. The fun takes place between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. There will be on-stage performances, carnival games, face painting and more. Peter Cottontail is the special guest! The Easter Egg Hunt starts at 1:30 p.m. The children, up to age 12, will be divided into age groups before the egg hunt begins. Deadline to nominate students for Mayor's Youth Council is April 4

Nominations are being accepted for the Mayor's Youth Council. Youth must be 13-19 years old by June 1, 2011; live in Burleson or Burleson's extra-territorial jurisdiction; and show leadership qualities within the community. Nominations are due to city hall by April 4. Nominated students must submit a questionnaire by April 11. A panel will select students to interview, then the students recommended by the panel will be presented to the Burleson City Council for appointment to the Mayor's Youth Council.
