Be a foster parent to puppies and kittensPhoto of foster puppy Gigi

Have you ever thought about serving as a foster parent to abandoned puppies or kittens? The Burleson Animal Shelter is looking for people to foster the baby animals who can not live in the shelter because their age makes them at risk for contracting illnesses. The foster parent would care for the puppies and kittens until they are old enough to be placed for adoption. Baby animals must be six weeks old, the age for the first set of shots, before they are eligible for adoption. Go to http://tinyurl.com/38glllc or call Animal Control Supervisor Kim Peckler at 817-426-9281.
Smoke testing can detect areas in need of repair in sanitary sewer system

The City will be conducting smoke testing throughout the sanitary sewer system over the next few months.  Smoke testing is done to identify areas of the wastewater collection system that are in need of repairs or maintenance.  Smoke testing may also identify areas on private property where repairs are needed, including roof drains that may be connected to the sanitary sewer which will need to be disconnected, damaged service lines, and faulty or failing connections inside the home or business. Any indication of odor or smoke inside your home or business is an indication that there are possible plumbing problems that may allow gases or odors from the sewer to enter.  If smoke does enter the building, call the City's public works department at 817-426-9830. If smoke is detected after business hours or on the weekend, call the police department at 817-426-9903. For more, go to http://tinyurl.com/36hhvn5.

Photo of Burleson Police badgeIf you drink and drive, you will go to jail over Labor Day

If you are celebrating the Labor Day holiday between now and Sept. 7, do it at home if drinking alcohol is part of the plans. The Burleson Police Department is participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail" Labor Day 2010 campaign. Since May 2008, for every driver in Burleson who is suspected of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and refuses to submit to a breath test, a warrant will be issued. The driver will be taken to the hospital for a mandatory blood draw to detect the level of alcohol in the bloodstream. In Texas, the legal limit is .08 BAC (blood or breath alcohol concentration). Fines, probation, jail, prison, and a suspended driver's license are the consequences a convicted driver who is 21 or older could face. For those drivers who are younger than 17, any amount of beer, wine or liquor will trigger the penalties for minor in possession or driving while under the influence.
