The proposed City budget for fiscal year 2010-2011 will be presented to council in a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, at city hall. City Manager Curtis Hawk presented his proposed budget to city council on Aug. 9. For the first time since 2001, the proposed budget would slightly cut the tax bill for the average home.  In addition, the proposed budget will result in a 3 percent cut in total taxes paid by properties (residential and commercial) who paid City property taxes in 2009 and will pay taxes in 2010. Photo of Burleson Police badgeIf you drink and drive, you will go to jail over Labor Day

If you are celebrating the Labor Day holiday between now and Sept. 7, do it at home if drinking alcohol is part of the plans. The Burleson Police Department is participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail" Labor Day 2010 campaign. Since May 2008, for every driver in Burleson who is suspected of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and refuses to submit to a breath test, a warrant will be issued. The driver will be taken to the hospital for a mandatory blood draw to detect the level of alcohol in the bloodstream. In Texas, the legal limit is .08 BAC (blood or breath alcohol concentration). Fines, probation, jail, prison, and a suspended driver's license are the consequences a convicted driver who is 21 or older could face. For those drivers who are younger than 17, any amount of beer, wine or liquor will trigger the penalties for minor in possession or driving while under the influence.
