Tarrant County enacts burn ban

Tarrant County Commissioners approved a ban on outdoor burning for the next 90 days, effective Aug. 17. All outdoor burning in Tarrant County is prohibited. Tarrant County is currently under drought conditions and the weather is expected to remain the same for the next two weeks. For more, go to http://tinyurl.com/2urxvwc.
Outdoor pool is open on weekends andOutdoor pool Labor Day

With students returning to school next week, the outdoor pool at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) is on reduced hours until the pool closes for the season on Sept. 7, the day after Labor Day. The pool at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. is now closed during the week.  It will be open on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 21-22, Aug. 28-29, and Sept. 4-5. Saturday hours are 1 p.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday hours are 1 p.m.-6 p.m. Labor Day is the final day of the outdoor season.  On Sept. 6, the pool will be open 1 p.m.-8 p.m. The Burleson Recreation Center and the indoor pool will not be open on Labor Day.

School busSlow down, the kids are back in school next week

The kids are headed back to school! Burleson Independent School District (BISD) campuses open on Tuesday, Aug. 24. Joshua Independent School District (JISD) campuses open on Aug. 23. The flashing lights to warn drivers to drop their speed in school zones have been activated. Seventeen school zones exist on Elk Drive; East Renfro at South Hurst; the 1800 block of East Renfro; Thomas Street; Johnson Avenue; Gregory, Dian, Irene, Dobson, East Miller, Ellison, Clark and Lawson streets; Alsbury, Summercrest, and McAlister boulevards; Park Meadow, Tarrant, Newton, Evelyn, and Lynnwood streets; Hurst at Hidden Creek Parkway; Pleasant Manor; Ranchway at Hwy. 174 (Wilshire Boulevard); and FM 1902. Enjoy a Parents Night Out Aug. 21 while the BRiCk staff watches your children

Do you need a "Parents Night Out?"  Call the Burleson Recreation Center, then make your own child-free plans for Saturday, Aug. 21. Kids (6-12 years old) will play team and individual games, create a craft, play Wii or PS3 games, eat pizza, and watch a movie. Children can be dropped off as early as 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 and must be picked up no later then 9:30 p.m. (late fee of $10 for every 10 minutes). The cost for Parents Night Out is $10 for BRiCk members and $15 for non-members. Call 817-426-9104 and reserve your child's place.

Registration for softball starts Aug. 23

Softball glove and ballRegistration for Fall Softball 2010 at Hidden Creek Sports Complex starts Monday, Aug. 23, at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) on Summercrest Boulevard. The registration is limited to the first nine teams in each league. Games are Monday-Thursday.  The cost is $300 per team. Registration ends Sept. 10 and league play begins Sept. 20. Volunteer to beautify Burleson Sept. 18Trash Off volunteers

Show your community pride Sept. 18 by joining the City and Keep Burleson Beautiful in cleaning up the city's retail corridors and residential drainage channels. Volunteer to join the Burleson Trash-Off at Warren Park on Johnson Avenue, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Following the cleanup, volunteers will convene at Warren Park for lunch and a prize ceremony.Volunteers should call the City's environmental services office in advance to register and receive a cleanup location assignment. Volunteers who are younger than 18 years old need to be supervised by an adult.  Call Environmental Programs Specialist Bianca Chafin at 817-426-9842 by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16.

MoneyProposed budget  includes slight cut in tax bill for average home

On Aug. 9, City Manager Curtis Hawk presented his proposed budget for fiscal year 2010-11 to city council. For the first time since 2001, the budget would slightly cut the tax bill for the average home.  In addition, the proposed budget will result in a 3 percent cut in total taxes paid by properties (residential and commercial) who paid City property taxes in 2009 and will pay taxes in 2010. The BRiCk adds more free classes!

The staff at the BRiCk has added new free video-based courses (the BRiCk supplies the workout room, video, and projector screen) to next week's schedule. Check out Low Impact, High Intensity Step Class on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and 3D Balance Pilates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And you can still catch "the Insanity" and work in some P90X to pump up your workout volume. Go to http://tinyurl.com/3347qk7  for more about free classes. Even if you are not a BRiCk member, you can participate in the free classes by purchasing a daily pass. The fee-based classes taught by instructors include Senior Water Aerobics, Lunch Crunch Water Aerobics (free to members but $35 for nonmembers), Zumba, Aqua Boot Camp, Early Bird Water Aerobics and Arthritis Water Aerobics. Tee off at Hidden Creek on Labor Day

GolfHidden Creek Golf Course will be open on Labor Day, and golfers only have to pay weekend rates! The course will be open 6 a.m.-7:30 p.m. The Burleson Public Library and the Senior Activity Center will be closed on Labor Day. The Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) and the indoor pool will be closed on Labor Day, but the outdoor pool will be open, 1 p.m.-8 p.m. Labor Day will be the final day of this season, for operation of the outdoor pool. Trash and curbside recycling will not collected on Monday, Sept. 6. The city council meeting scheduled for Monday evening has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Sept. 7. The work session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the regular meeting will start at 7 p.m.

Carter BloodCare and the City of Burleson will be hosting a blood drive on Monday, Aug. 30, at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk). Blood will be drawn from donors between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the Carter BloodCare mobile donor bus in the parking lot at 550 N.W. Parking and design standards will be discussed Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at an Old Town stakeholders meeting at Burleson City Hall. The Aug. 24 meeting will focus on every day issues faced by businesses, residents and visitors in the Old Town area. Specific topics included the parking situation in Old Town and the design standards ordinance. The Help, a book by Kathryn Stockett that focuses on three ordinary women in a 1960s Mississippi, is the focus of the Book Discussion Group this month. Put Saturday, Sept. 11, on your calendar for the grand opening of Chisenhall Fields, 500 W. Hidden Creek Parkway! Opening ceremonies will take place at 9 a.m. on the Arabian Field. The festivities will begin with the parade of Burleson Youth Association teams that include athletes from 3 years old up to 18. The stars of the opening ceremonies will be the members of the Bad Boyz team, the first Burleson Youth Association team to ever advance to the Bronco World Series.
