Lock it up and hide valuables if you don't want to make your car an easy target
Thieves don't always have to work to get what they want. A 17-year-old Burleson man was arrested at 4:14 a.m. on June 21 for five counts of burglary of a motor vehicle and one count of public intoxication. The burglaries took place in a one block area on Hillside. A week later, vehicles in three retail parking lots were burglarized. The suspect(s) in those cases smashed windows. Valuable property had been left in plain sight. And, the week of July 6-12, nine vehicle burglaries were reported in neighborhoods. Of those nine, seven of the vehicles were either left unlocked or valuables were left unsecured in the beds of the pickups. How do you make a difference? Lock your vehicle. Don't leave valuables in plain sight. If you have valuables in your vehicle and you have to make multiple stops, stow those valuables out of sight before you reach your next destination. Why should you get involved in the National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 3? Your community building efforts help create strong, safe communities. When neighbors know each other and work together you can expect increased safety. A neighbor talking with another neighbor - communication - is the most important part of National Night Out. This can be done over a pot luck dinner, an ice cream cone, volleyball net, or any other activity that brings people together. Neighborhood events build a community where youth can witness examples of good citizenship. If your group has an event scheduled, call the Burleson Police Department's community resource officers - Mike Owen and Jack Goleman - at 817-426-9910 or e-mail cro@burlesontx.com to get your National Night Out event on the calendar. | | |
