Neighbors, stand united for 27th annual National Night Out celebration Aug. 3 National Night Out Logo 2010

Do you want to make a difference in your neighborhood and community? Talk to five or six neighbors, form a block party, and join the National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 3. This is the 27th National Night Out event. The goal is to increase awareness about crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Chisenhall Fields hosts soft opening JulyChisenhall Fields aerial, 71210 21 with tournament

The transformation of Chisenhall Park into Chisenhall Fields, located at 500 Hidden Creek Pkwy., will be near completion at the end of the month when the Burleson Youth Association (BYA) hosts three baseball tournaments - July 21, July 28 and Aug. 2. At the conclusion of the tournaments, the park will again close as City park maintenance crews prepare for the inaugural season of fall ball as well as the park's first football league.  The fall play begins on Tuesday, Sept. 7, when the BYA opens its fall season.  Stay tuned for details on the City's grand opening slated for Saturday, Sept. 11. 

Games, pizza and a movie highlight PizzaBRiCk's second Parents Night Out

Do you need a "Parents Night Out?"  Call the Burleson Recreation Center, then make your own child-free plans for Saturday, July 17. Kids (6-12 years old) will play team and individual games, create a craft, play Wii or PS3 games and eat pizza. The fun also includes a movie. Children can be dropped off as early as 4:30 p.m. on July 17 and must be picked up no later then 9:30 p.m. (late fee of $10 for every 10 minutes). The cost for Parents Night Out is $10 for BRiCk members and $15 for non-members. Call 817-426-9104 and reserve your child's place.

Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' is free family film fare July 23 at the library 
It's Family Film time at the Burleson Public Library, 1 p.m. on Friday, July 23. The feature is the Tim Burton version of Walt Johnny Depp, Alice in WonderlandDisney's "Alice in Wonderland." This is a 3D magical twist with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowski as 19-year-old Alice who returns to the whimsical world and is reunited with her childhood friends - White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Dormouse, Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter. Job seekers, pre-register for two free workforce programs slated for July 22 

The Burleson Public Library (248 S.W. Johnson Ave.) will host Resumea Workforce Development program presented by the North Texas Regional Library System on Thursday, July 22. "Resumes, Cover Letters and Interviewing Tips" is the 10:30 a.m. offering and "How To Look for a Job Online" is the 2 p.m. offering. These one-time only programs are for job seekers looking to improve their skills. Classes last approximately two hours. Laptop computers will be provided. Classes are free, but you must pre-register by calling 817-426-9207. There is a limit of 16 participants per class.
 
Members, get 'insane' at the BRiCk! 
It's time to a get a little insane, for free, at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) next week. The BRiCk is now offering free Insanity fitness classes for members six days a week, starting Monday, July 19. Insanity classes are at 6:15 a.m., Monday-Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Non-members can take advantage of the free fitness classes, which include P90X, Pilates, and even classes for pre-teens by purchasing a daily pass. Tell us what you want for swim classes, aqua fitness classes at the BRiCk!  Indoor pool

If the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) isn't offering the swim lessons or aqua fitness classes that interest you, then get some friends together and make a request. A swim class must have a minimum of four students per swimming instructor. Tell the staff what fitness classes you would like to see offered in the aquatics center in the fall and they will see if the demand is there. Currently, there is one free aqua fitness class for BRiCk members. Hidden Creek Golf Course will host the 2010 Burleson City Championship tournament Saturday, July 24-Sunday, July 25, at 555 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy.  The entry deadline is 5 p.m. on July 22. The championship will be conducted at individual gross stroke play over 36 holes. The entry fee is $110, which includes the green fees/cart fees/range as well as lunch both days (following your rounds), tournament gifts and tournament prizes. Cartooning Under the Sea

 
Cartooning Under the Sea! That's the name of the July 19-22 Young Rembrandts workshop at the Burleson Recreation Center. Children 6-12 years old will learn how to draw sharks, jelly fish, octopus and more. Students will combine their talents on the last day to create a coral reef environment. The cost is $95 for members and $105 for non-BRiCk members. Call 817-426-9104.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society
