Why does the City issue emergency notification phone calls when a severe thunderstorm is eminent? Thunderstorms produce lightning, and lightning kills more people each year than tornadoes. In North Central Texas, most thunderstorms happen in the afternoon. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes.
