Claude Scally, Fire Officer fo the Year

Lt. Claude Scally's mentorship as well as his wealth of knowledge about the emergency medical system and apparatus earned him the Burleson Fire Department's 2009 Fire Officer of the Year. Scally, 45, was hired by Burleson Jan. 14, 2004. He has 22 years of service with the Crowley Fire Department where he is still division chief of operations, worked five years for the Bedford Fire Department where he was an emergency medical technician/paramedic, and has worked as an EMT/Paramedic for Burleson for six years. Front entrance to BRiCkRecreation center opens doors May 17

What can you do when you walk in the door of the Burleson Recreation Center (BRiCk) on Monday, May 17? A lot . . . and there is more to come after the grand opening that is slated for Saturday, June 5.  On May 17, as a member or daily guest member you can work out in the fitness area on all of the equipment - cardio equipment, free weights, and machine weights - swim in the indoor pool, and climb on the rock wall. For more, go to

Challenger Rick D. Green defeated Place 2 Incumbent Jim Wadlow in the May 8 Burleson City Council election. Green is a former city council member. The 45-year-old resident is employed as a financial advisor. He will be sworn in at the May 17 council meeting. Wadlow, 77, has served on the council since 2006. Matt Aiken will be sworn in for the Place 4 seat. He replaces Carter Mahanay, who did not file for re-election. Mahanay was elected in 2008. Jeff Hart, Rookie Fire Fighter of the Year
Hart earns Rookie Fire Fighter of the Year

Jeff Hart took the initiative to send himself through driver/operator school and is always trying to find something to do when all of the other work is done. For those reasons, and more, Hart won the Burleson Fire Department's 2009 Rookie Fire Fighter of the Year award. Hart, 33, was hired by Burleson April 1, 2009. He had been a captain for the Marlin Fire Department, 2007-2009. Hart is in training to become certified as an EMT-Intermediate. For more, go to

Police department opens its doors for BPD traffic unitannual Open House
Did you make it to the Burleson Police Department's annual Open House May 11 in honor of National Police Week? Take a look at the photo album on the City of Burleson, Texas Facebook page, http://tinyurl.com/25r5kot. The honor guard provided a 21-gun salute, taps and presented the colors during the opening ceremony. Children, and adults, got a close-up look at the SWAT vehicle, bicycle patrol, traffic unit, crime detector and more at the three-hour event. Burleson has lost one officer, Janice Vanderveer, in the line of duty. She died while working a traffic accident in December 1987.
Recycle those electronics and dispose ofElectronic recycling your household hazardous waste safely, May 22 
Do you have some household hazardous waste that needs to be disposed of safely, or some electronics that you would like to recycle? Don't miss the May 22 event at the City's old service center at the corner of Renfro and Main streets. The event will take place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the Crud Cruiser is full. Only household hazardous waste from Burleson residents will be accepted. Bring a water or solid waste bill as proof of residency.  There are fees for processing some electronics. Burleson residency is not required for electronic recycling. Electronic material from homes and businesses will be accepted. You've seen the promotions for the Caregiver Education classes, Cook Children's Health Services at the library, the Senior Center Health Fair, and the police department's bicycle safety rodeo. Those, and more, are being rolled into the City's newest initiative, Be Safe, Be Well, and Be Healthy. Veteran looks at bricksHonor local military veterans with a brick at Veteran's Park

Local military veterans can still be immortalized with a brick at the City's Veteran's Park in the B&G development at 298 W. Renfro. Stop by the Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. and request a Brick for Veterans order form, or go to http://tinyurl.com/lnl42g.htm on the library web site. The brick includes the name of the veteran, branch of service, and the name of the conflicts, if any. An engraved seal representing that veteran's branch of service is also included on the brick. Golf club and ballHidden Creek Golf Course will be open on Memorial Day
All City facilities - with the exception of Hidden Creek Golf Course, the police department and the fire stations - will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. The golf course will be open 6 a.m.-8 p.m.  Golfers will be treated to holiday rates, which are the same as weekend rates. The Burleson Recreation Center (BRiCk) will be closed, but the outdoor pool will be open on Memorial Day. There will be no trash and no curbside recycling collection on May 31. The Parent Meeting and New Skill Evaluation for the Burleson Barracuda Swim Team will take place May 24, instead of May 16, as was printed in the Burleson Community Guide published by the City's recreation department. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Burleson Recreation Center's indoor Natatorium party rooms. Swimmers may sign up May 24 for $100. Morning practices start June 7. The practice

Grab your lawn chair or blanket and a picnic and head to Ellison Street. The free, five-week Hot Sounds of Summer concert series kicks off in Old Town on May 28. The Spazmatics will start the Friday night series at 7:30 p.m. with a 90-minute concert. The Mayor's Youth Council will be digging, adding mulch, and planting flowers at a playground at 301 MedPark Circle, behind Huguley Memorial Medical Center, on Saturday, May 15. The group will be meeting at the site at 9:30 a.m. Anyone who is interested can also participate. Contact Caitlan Smelley, 817-426-9687. Burleson fourth graders can find out now if they have what it takes to be a fire fighter. The Burleson Fire Department is hosting a Junior Fire Academy Monday, June 7-Thursday, June 10. The free camp starts at 8 a.m. sharp and wraps up by noon.Hands-on activities will include working with fire hydrants and fire hoses, conducting hose drags, doing search and rescue and participating in a smoke drill in the training tower.  The deadline to apply is May 24. Applications are available at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. The City's Parks and Recreation department is hosting a double elimination adult softball tournament Saturday, May 22, at Hidden Creek Sports Complex.  This is a Co-Rec E and Men's E tournament. The City's recycling center on Haskew Street
has moved to the Compost Center on Memorial Plaza so that there is a one-stop shop for recyclables and mulch processing. The Compost Center is located behind Fire Station #2.  You must be a Burleson resident (pay a utility bill or solid waste bill from the City) to use the recycle center and compost center. Hours for both are  9 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Go to
