Bastible goes from Rookie of the Year in 2007 to Officer of the Year in 2009
Burleson Police Officer Craig Bastible keeps achieving. He won Rookie of the Year honors for 2007, then his peers awarded him Officer of the Year honors for 2009. Bastible, 24, was one of seven nominated for the department's top honor for sworn personnel. The honoree is described as "as outstanding as a person as he is an officer. He continues to demonstrate the characteristics that most departments strive to achieve in all officers. He is always looking for new things to help him improve." Cleburne native earns Rookie of the Year honors for police department The professionalism of Burleson police officers is what drew Chaz Garrett to apply for a job with the department. Saturday, his professionalism was recognized as his peers selected him as the department's Rookie of the Year for 2009. Garrett was one of three rookies nominated. According to the nomination, Garrett has "made an outstanding transformation from recruit to police officer. He is one of the most motivated rookies and is knowledgeable of his job and duties. One Burleson City Council race on May 8 ballot is contested
One resident added his hat to the ring of Burleson City Council candidates Thursday afternoon, making the May 8 election a contested election. Rick D. Green, 45, filed for Place 2 against incumbent Jim Wadlow. Unopposed seats on the ballot include challenger Matt Aiken, who filed for Place 4 (currently held by Carter Mahanay), incumbent Chip Stephens who filed for Place 6, and incumbent Ken Shetter who filed for mayor. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday, March 8. Candidates must file paperwork with the city secretary at Burleson City Hall. Candidates must be at least 18 years old; a citizen of the United States; a qualified voter of the city of Burleson; a resident of the city, and have resided in the city for at least one year immediately preceding the date of the election; not delinquent in the payment of taxes or other liability due to the City of Burleson; and, not otherwise disqualified from serving on the city council by any other provision of law. Peers select Citizens Police Academy coordinator as Supervisor of the Year The 2009 Supervisor of the Year for the Burleson Police Department "continues to forge a positive relationship with the citizens and positive perception of the Burleson Police Department. He has shown that he is dedicated to the community." That nomination letter, and the votes of his peers, earned Sgt. Brian O'Heren, 36, one of the department's top awards for 2009. O'Heren took on the responsibilities as coordinator and an instructor of the department's Basic Citizens Police Academy and Advanced Citizens Police Academy. Community center comes down as BRiCk prepares to open in two months The Burleson Community Center, which has graced Chisenhall Park since 1981, came down last Friday. That center was 11,000 square feet. The new two-story Burleson Recreation Center (BRiCk) under construction inside Bartlett Park on Summercrest Boulevard is 65,000 square feet on 34 acres. Thanks to sales tax and gas well revenues, the citizens of Burleson and beyond will be enjoying the BRiCk by May. |
Registration for City's Spring Softball season ends Wednesday
Registration for the City's Spring Softball 2010 season ends March 10. League play begins the week of March 22. Co-recreational teams play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Men's teams play all four nights. The fee is $300 per team. Registration hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. No registration will be accepted after the deadline. There are no non-resident fees or requirements. There is also no gate fee for spectators or players.
