City's own earns prestigious Athena honors
One of the City's own was recognized at the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce banquet for her support of professional women. Burleson Police Commander Cindy Aaron accepted the Athena Award. The Athena is given each year to a woman who is honored for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. Community Center is set for demolition in February
The Burleson Community Center, which has graced Chisenhall Park since 1981, is coming down in February.The staff will movr into the new center, the BRiCk (Burleson Recreation Center) by May 2010. They moved out of the current center Jan. 28. Part of the center staff moved to the Senior Activity Center on Johnson Avenue, where all of the parks and recreation classes and Father/Daughter Mother/Son Valentine's Dance will take place, and the other half moved to old Fire Station #1 (the annex which houses parks maintenance and facilities maintenance) at the corner of Bransom and Eldred streets in Old Town. If you can't wait until May 22, take household hazardous waste to ECC
Residents who do not want to wait until the May 22 Household Hazardous Waste collection event in Burleson, can take their household hazardous waste to the Environmental Collection Center (ECC) in Fort Worth. The ECC is open Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The ECC is located at 6400 Bridge St. There is no fee for dropping off your household hazardous waste, however, residents must take a City of Burleson water or solid waste bill as proof of residency. Attention all track athletes!
If you are between the ages of four and 18 and track events are your passion, sign up for the 2010 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Summer Track program coordinated by the City's parks and recreation department. Early registration is March 22-May 21. Practices begin the first week in May, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., at Hughes Middle School. The fee for the first family member is $30. Registration for the City's Spring Softball 2010 season begins Monday, Feb. 1. The deadline is March 10. Registration is limited to the first nine teams in each league. Play begins the week of March 22. Co-recreational teams play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Men's teams play Monday-Thursday. The fee is $300 per team. No gate fee for spectators or players. If you have an alarm system in your home or business designed to summon police in case of an emergency, you have to have an alarm system permit. If the permit is not renewed by Jan. 31, the homeowner or business owner will be fined $10, in addition to the price of the permit. Alarm system permits are $50 for homes and $100 for businesses, annually.
