Six rookie fire fighters earn badges
Six fire fighters earned their badges Jan. 11 in a ceremony at the Burleson Fire Department's Station #1. Fire fighters Rob Moore, Jeff Hart, Kevin Hunter, David Franks, Jon Wheat and Juliet Knight were presented with silver department badges as well as silver collar brass. Also honored were the department's three newest lieutenants - Josh Jacobs, Casey Davis and Steve Burchette - and six new engineers - Shelby Stone, Matt Moseley, Shane Mobley, Jake Hopps, Scott Johns and Chuck Martinez. Make Valentines special with tickets to Father/Daughter Mother/Son Dance
Make your son or daughter feel special this Valentine's with tickets for the City's annual Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Valentine's Dance. But get your tickets early because space is limited. The Valentine's fun will take place Saturday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., at the Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. Pre-event tickets are $15 per couple. Tickets at the door are $25 per couple. The ticket price includes dinner, dancing (with music provided by a professional disc jockey), corsages, and pictures of the couples. If you have a computer and Internet access, you can watch City meetings
The City of Burleson will begin broadcasting city council meetings and planning and zoning commission meetings on the worldwide web for the first time in its history as part of a wide-ranging transparency in government initiative. Anyone with a computer and Internet access will be able to watch meetings live, as they are happening, and can review previously streamed meetings on-line on the City of Burleson web site, www.burlesontx.com. Welcome the City's newest volunteers
Welcome, and thank you, to the Burleson citizens who have joined the ranks of appointees to City boards, commissions and committees. The newest members include Nancy Haggerty (Planning and Zoning Commission), Jim Lott and J P Koval (Library Board) and Vicki Sorenson, Kurt Jaeger and Scott Lynch (Old Town Standards Committee). Step up and get CERT-trained to help your neighbors in the event of a disaster
The City's Fire Prevention division needs you to volunteer in the event of a disaster. A CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class will begin March 25. The training includes eight classes (two-three hours each on Thursday evenings) and culminates in a simulation exercise. The free training will take place at Fire Station #1 on Alsbury Boulevard and Fire Station #2 on Memorial Plaza. You must be at least 18 years old, be able to perform physical labor, and provide your own transportation. Contact Fire Marshal Stacy Singleton, 817-426-9174, or e-mail ssingleton@burlesontx.com. Senior Activity Center offers dancing and tumbling classes for children starting Feb. 2
If your youngster wants to learn dance or tumbling, classes are offered on Tuesdays, starting Feb. 2, March 2 and April 6 at the Senior Activity Center (216 S.W. Johnson Ave.). The focus is on tapping, tumbling, and ballet. The cost is $20 for each four-week session. The 30-minute classes are for children 18-months-old to 5 years old. Class times are 6 p.m., Tapping Tots; Mommy and Me Tumbling, 6:30 p.m.; Tap and Ballet, 7 p.m.; and Co-Ed Tumbling, 7:30 p.m. The students will perform at the April 30 Cinco de Mayo celebration.  Trash will be collected and you can play golf on Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday All City facilities, with the exception of the police and fire stations and Hidden Creek Golf Course, will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Jan. 18. The city council meeting scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day is postponed until Tuesday, Jan. 19. The council work session begins at 6 p.m. and the council meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at Burleson City Hall. The Burleson Police are investigating three possible attempted abductions involving children. These occurred between Jan. 9 and Jan. 11. The vehicle described in two of the incidents is a small gray Dodge pickup. Join the Un-Finished Objects (UFO) group which meets for the first time on Thursday, Jan. 21, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Burleson Public Library. Adults can work on their needlepoint, quilting, knitting, crocheting or other unfinished projects while chatting and listening to the library staff read short stories.
