Pain was worth the gain in first dodge ball fundraiser to benefit Heart For The Kids
Burleson police officers and fire fighters have met on the softball field and football field, but Dec. 5 was the first time they faced off in a dodge ball showdown. Hughes Middle School added a dodge ball tournament to their extravaganza this year with the admission price of one toy for the BPD-BFD charity, Heart For The Kids. The two departments played the best two out of three games and came out smiling. The two faced off again Dec. 12 for the annual Red Vs. Blue charity football game. |
Stock the stacks and honor a loved one The Burleson Public Library wants your help to "stock the stacks" and, in return, you can honor a loved one during the holidays. Some of the library's favorite books are showing their age. Clean copies of specific tiles from authors including Nicholas Sparks, Mary Higgins Clark, James Patterson, Stephen King, R.L. Stine and Ron Roy are on the library's wish list. When a clean copy of a requested title is donated, a commemorative bookplate will be placed in the book when that book is added to the collection. The book may be donated in memory of a loved one, in honor of a friend, or to show support for the Burleson Public Library. For a list of the books, go to the Burleson Public Library web site at www.burlesonlibrary.com. |

Buckle up on the road during holidays
Buckle up over the holidays. State seat belt and child safety seat laws were strengthened Sept. 1, 2009. All occupants of a passenger vehicle, no matter their age or where they are sitting in the vehicle, must be secured by a safety belt. Maximum fines can reach as high as $200, plus court costs. The previous law exempted anyone 17 and older from wearing a seat belt in the back seat. The new law also adds seat belt requirements for larger passenger vans. The child passenger safety seat law now requires any child younger than 8 years old to be restrained in an approved child safety seat system unless that child is taller than 4-feet 9-inches. Another new state law prohibits a motorcycle operator from carrying a passenger who is younger than 5 years old unless that child is seated in a sidecar that is attached to the motorcycle. Holiday distractions can lead to tragedy
The holidays can be a time of good cheer, or tragedy. Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations significantly contribute to the seasonal causes of home fires. When everyone gets rushed, distracted or tired, that's when home fires are more likely to occur.
