traffic conesSanta requests road closures and detours for Dec. 5 festivities
Since Santa moved his annual breakfast from the Burleson Community Center to the Burleson Senior Activity Center, there are additional road closures and detours Saturday, Dec. 5. The intersections of Ellison Street at Johnson Avenue and Ellison at Anderson Street will be closed, 6 a.m. -10 p.m. Breakfast with Santa will take place, 7 a.m. -11:30 a.m., at the senior activity center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave.  Roads along the traditional parade route will also be closed starting as early as 2 p.m. to keep everyone safe for the Burleson Rotary Club's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" lighted parade as well as the City's tree lighting, visits with Santa, and the fireworks show choreographed to music. Dodge ball, police and fire fighters and toys . . . needy children benefit at Christmas
Burleson police officers and Burleson fire fighters are facing off on the gym floor Dec. 5 and the competition is all about benefitting needy children through Heart For The Kids. On Saturday, the two departments will see who can win the best two out of three games of dodge ball. Hughes Middle School is hosting the 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza and Dodge Ball Tournament. The City's public safety employees play their first game at 10 a.m. Admission to the extravaganza is $2 or free for those 6 and younger. Everyone is also asked to bring a new toy to the dodge ball tournament to go to the public safety departments' Heart For The Kids fundraiser. Go to http://tinyurl.com/yzggxds on the City's web site.
Santa Claus, pancakes and sausage, Senior Activity Center . . . be there Saturday!
Reserve Dec. 5 for Christmas in Burleson!Eatign pancakes and sausage Santa and his elves have moved his annual Santa's Breakfast from the Burleson Community Center to the Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. Saint Nick's elves will be up early on Dec. 5, flipping pancakes and cooking sausage by 7 a.m. Santa will hear wishes until 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $3 for children/$4 for adults in advance or $5 for children/$7 for adults at the door of the senior center. SPJST lighted Christmas floatParade entries light up the night Dec. 5
The Burleson Rotary Club's annual lighted Christmas parade steps off from Kerr Middle School at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. The theme this year is "I'll Be Home For Christmas." This is a lighted parade that is open to floats, cars, horses, fire trucks, and more! All entries must be outfitted with Christmas lights. Music is also encouraged. Parade lineup starts at 4 p.m. Parade applications are available at the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, Service First Mortgage and Burleson City Hall. Learn urban wildlife do's and don'ts Dec. 8
Jessica Alderson, an urban wildlife biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife, will lead an urban wildlife education program Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Burleson City Hall. The program will cover a variety of urban wildlife, including coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, birds and rabbits, and how to co-exist with nature. Go to http://tinyurl.com/y9yyzyt.
Artists earn thrill of flipping the Flipping the switchswitch on City's Christmas tree
Two talented artists (and Bransom Bobcats) Carlos Garcia and Halle Pittman, both 8 years old, have earned a seat next to Santa Claus on the last float in the Burleson Rotary Club parade on Saturday, Dec. 5. The students were picked for their artistic talents in a coloring contest hosted by the City's parks and recreation department. The winners not only get to ride with Santa Claus in the parade, which starts at 6 p.m. from Kerr Middle School, but they will also help Mr. Claus flip the switch on the City's 25-foot Christmas tree at the corner of Johnson Avenue and Ellison Street. Two girls with Santa at sleighSign kids up for phone call from the North Pole!
Burleson children will receive a personal phone call from Santa Claus thanks to the North Pole Calling program coordinated by the City of Burleson's parks and recreation department. Children have to send their parents to the Burleson Community Center or Burleson Public Library to make an appointment with the most famous North Pole resident. Santa's helpers will help St. Nick coordinate the phone calls, which will be made between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14, through Thursday, Dec. 17. The City's 25-foot Christmas tree is up at the corner of Johnson Avenue and Ellison Street! The tree is outfitted with more than 10,000 lights. The official lighting, courtesy of Santa Claus and two talented artists from the third grade, will take place at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, after the Christmas parade. The tree lighting will be followed by a fireworks extravaganza show, then Santa will head to his sleigh to take more Christmas wishes. Go to http://tinyurl.com/ybr7p58.

Check out some reading material for the holidays! "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe is the adult discussion book for the meeting Dec. 28, 6:30 p.m., at the Burleson Public Library. The novel chronicles the life of Okonkwo, the leader of an Igbo (Ibo) community, from his banishment from the community for accidentally killing a clansman, through seven years of exile, to his return. City of Burleson offices, with the exception of Hidden Creek Golf Course, the Burleson Police Department and the three fire stations, will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 15, between 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. so that City employees may attend the City's annual Christmas awards luncheon.
