Using your cell phone in an active school zone will cost you
Stay off that cell phone, unless you are using a hands-free device, while you are driving through an active school zone in Burleson. The 50 signs explaining the restriction, and the fine, have been erected in all of the school zones inside the city limits of Burleson. Community celebrates City's founding Oct. 10
The City's parks and recreation department and the Burleson Heritage Foundation (BHF) will join forces Oct. 10 for the 17th annual Founders Day celebration, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in Old Town. Mock gunfights and great food are on tap. Expect arts and crafts of all varieties, carnival rides and musical entertainment. Founders Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of October in recognition of the date that Burleson was founded, Oct. 10, 1881. The festival kicked off in 1993. Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned!
"Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned!" That's the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2009, Oct. 4-10.  Sparky the Fire Dog's Fire Inspection Checklist includes damaged Sparkyelectrical cords; too many appliances and lights plugged into one electrical outlet; smoke alarms that don't work (or need fresh batteries); cluttered or inaccessible escape routes; curtains and other flammables near a stovetop; portable space heaters left turned on or placed too close to flammables; build-up in the lint filter on the clothes dryer; the absence of an adult in the kitchen when food is cooking on the stovetop; a furnace that has not been inspected for more than a year; and, a chimney that has not been inspected or cleaned for more than a year. More than 20 residents are appointed to City boards and commissions
Congratulations to the more than 20 residents who were appointed to City of Burleson boards and commissions at the Sept. 21 Burleson City Council meeting. Burleson's military veterans are the guests of honor Saturday, Nov. 7, when the City of Burleson, Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, Renfro Square developers and community volunteers host the third annual Military Veteran Tribute at Renfro Square. Tap, tumble and plie starting Oct. 6 Ballet dancers feet 
If your youngster wants to learn dance, classes are offered on Tuesdays, starting Oct. 6, and Fridays, starting Oct. 9. The focus is on tapping, tumbling, and ballet. Disposing of residential trash is as easy as ABC . . . just know your zone!
Disposing of your residential trash is as simple as ABC. A is for special pickup items such as mattresses, furniture, carpet, and appliances. B is for limbs, brush, lumber and wood. And, C is for yard waste in paper lawn bags. All three are picked up during your zone week. Zone 1's pickup is the first Monday of the month. Zone 2's pickup is the second Monday, Zone 3's pickup is the third Monday, and Zone 4's pickup is the fourth Monday. Items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your designated Monday. What is your zone? Killer tomatoes'Killer Tomatoes Eat France' hits Burleson Public Library Oct. 5
The Burleson Public Library is hosting "Horribly Horrible Horror Mondays," the movie series for October, starting with "Killer Tomatoes Eat France" on Oct. 5. This 1991 movie, the fourth and last installment in the "Killer Tomato" series, features Marc Price, Angela Visser, Steve Lundquist and John Astin. Professor Gangrene returns, this time in France, to pursue world domination through his killer tomatoes. The Monday night movies start at 7 p.m. at 248 SW Johnson Ave., and, the movies are free!
Join your neighbors and fight back against crime with National Night Out Oct. 13 
Don't be surprised if police officers and your local and state representative show up on your block Oct. 13. The Burleson Police Department is celebrating National Night Out, Tuesday, Oct. 13. Target is a national sponsor of the National Night Outcrime prevention event. Approximately 15 neighborhood groups, including several apartment complexes, from across the city have signed up to participate by gathering together and hosting everything from light refreshments to cookouts with bounce houses. The block parties will take place between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.  State representatives Chris Turner and Rob Orr as well as members of the Burleson City Council, City staff and police department will make the rounds of the block parties. Get your neighborhood involved by calling 817-426-9910 or 817-739-5183.

The Burleson Police Department offers fingerprinting for the public Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays, noon- 5 p.m. Bring your fingerprint card. The fee is $10.

Military veterans are being honored with a brick at the fountain at Renfro Square. The Burleson Public Library updated its web site with order forms, a change order form, and a map of existing bricks. Bricks are $45 each. Each contains the veteran's name, branch of service, and names of conflicts he/she served in. Orders made by Oct. 5, will be placed in time for the Nov. 7 Military Veteran Tribute. http://tinyurl.com/lnl42g.
