It's time to start planning now for America Recycles Day on November 15. It's the one day when everyone's focus will be on recycling.

In previous years, Great Forest has generated buzz with large, attention-grabbing structures made out of recyclables, organized recycling games, and conducted employee education sessions. Great Forest Strikes Gold Twice in Top LEED City

LEED Gold for 2325 Dulles Corner Blvd in Herndon, VA
LEED Gold for 2325 Dulles Corner Blvd in Herndon, VA

Great Forest has struck gold twice in the nation's capital,

helping to add two more LEED certified buildings to the city's already impressive roster. Washington, D.C. tops the country in LEED green buildings.

"We are seeing more and more LEED projects coming our way as our clients are aggressively pursuing LEED certification for their buildings in Maryland, Virginia, and especially in D.C. Developers and real estate companies seem to be increasingly focused on developing tenant spaces that are as sustainable as possible," says David Troust, VP of Business Development at Great Forest.

Great Forest was part of the team that helped 2325 Dulles Corner Boulevard in Herndon, VA, and 64 New York Avenue in NE Washington, D.C., achieve LEED Gold certifications. Great Forest's work on these projects included the development of a fast track recycling program and a universal waste program, tenant education, janitorial training, and waste audit and metrics reporting.

Congratulations to everyone.

Q&A: Should I set up a Building-Wide Recycling Program or can each Tenant Follow Their Own Rules?

To have an effective and successful recycling effort, you need a cohesive building-wide recycling strategy that all tenants should follow.

The building-wide recycling program should include guidelines for tenant separation of mixed paper, and bottles and cans from non-recyclable materials.  The guidelines should also include basic instructions on how tenants should manage spent bulbs and e-waste.  All tenants should be provided with standard signage with these guidelines to post in common areas.

Standardizing a building-wide program for all tenants will make it easier to educate tenant employees and less confusing for the cleaning staff when they collect waste and recyclables.

Of course there will be tenants who have specific material streams unique to their business. Media companies may have large quantities of tapes and CDs. Clothing companies may have large quantities of textile waste.  In these cases tenants should have a recovery plan in place for the recycling of these additional waste materials, however they should still follow the building recycling guidelines.
