Let's Not Overlook Universal Solutions to Homelessness: Single Payer and Affordable Housing Bills Need Co-Sponsors!
We can do more than simply fight for the status quo, and we shouldn't abandon the conversation about solutions to poor health and homelessness in the United States. There are still legislators willing to fight for universal health care and affordable housing-let's support their efforts and ask others to join in. |
Support Universal Health Care
While the entire country continues to talk about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), what's not often mentioned are the 21 million people who will continue to be uninsured even after the entire law goes into effect-that's almost half of the 50 million currently uninsured. Hence, we'll continue to have a problem with accessible, affordable health care. Fundamentally, the ACA doesn't fix the underlying problem created by a profit-driven, fragmented health care system that is difficult to navigate and costly to operate. A publicly financed, privately delivered health care system, known as a single payer system, remains the most equitable and efficient model.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) recently introduced legislation to establish a single payer health care system, but are in need of additional co-sponsors. The American Health Security Act (H.R. 1200 and S. 915) would guarantee health coverage to all residents of the United States, thereby eliminating the administrative complexities and coverage gaps experienced with the current system. The bill text and summary are now available. In past years, there have been more co-sponsors to the single payer legislation in Congress than any of the other "health reform" bills introduced. Here is a list of the 87 Congress members who previously sponsored the single payer legislation-let's help ensure widespread support again this year.

Support Affordable Housing
The National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF), designed as a dedicated source of funding for affordable housing, was established in 2008 but never funded. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) recently introduced a bill that would provide initial funding to the NHTF. The Preserving Homes and Communities Act (H.R. 1477 and S. 489) would provide $1 billion for the NHTF from the profits made on the sale of "warrants" obtained through Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). A warrant is the right to purchase stock at a specified price, and so far the Treasury has sold such warrants for increase in revenue of more than $8 billion. The bill text and summary are now available. This initial capitalization of the NHTF would provide 10,000 new affordable rental units. Find information about your state and district here. Act now to urge more members to cosponsor this effort. |
TAKE ACTION
- Ask your Representative to cosponsor The American Health Security Act (H.R. 1200 in the House, S. 915 in the Senate) and The Preserving Homes and Communities (H.R. 1477 in the House, S. 489 in the Senate).
- Tell your Representative of the important role universal health care and affordable housing play in the lives of your clients. We can prevent and end homelessness through such measures.
