RESEARCH PRE-CONFERENCE INSTITUTE
JUNE 2, 2010 | SAN FRANCISCO | |
Conducting Practice-Based Health Care for the Homeless Research: Implications for Health Practice, Policy and Advocacy
As part of the 2010 National Health Care for the Homeless Conference & Policy Symposium, the Council is offering a pre-conference institute for administrators, project directors, program managers, clinicians and consumers who have limited research experience.
Speaker presentations and panel discussions will provide the foundation of why health care for the homeless research is important, and offer techniques for implementing research in practice-based settings. The session will also address the challenges of incorporating research into a busy HCH practice setting.
Attendees will work in groups throughout the institute applying research processes to clinical topics of interest that will be determined by each group. Work groups will - explore research strategies to address chosen clinical topics
- identify research stakeholders, collaborators and funding sources
- list ways that research findings might be translated into health practice and policy recommendations
Finally, participants will have the opportunity to network and build partnerships for future research endeavors that may include collaborations with academic health centers, residency programs, social service agencies and other organizations.

| PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH NETWORK | | |
Invitation to join the Council's PBRN
The Council's Health Care for the Homeless Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) focuses on research in clinical settings that explores issues affecting the primary health care needs of those experiencing homelessness.
The HCH PBRN Steering Committee collaborates with the Council's Research Coordinating Committee to develop and manage research projects of particular relevance to homeless health care practice. Once the Steering Committee approves a research proposal, staff invites PBRN members to participate.
To join the HCH PBRN and receive invitations to participate in studies, please contact Darlene Jenkins, DrPH, the Council's research director; our newest members are If you are interested in
conducting research with the HCH PBRN, download and complete the
Research Proposal Form, which is available online.

| COUNCIL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES | | Violence on the Streets
The National Consumer Advisory Board (NCAB) has been conducting Consumer Participation Outreach surveys the past four years. HCH projects' Consumer Advisory Board members go to the streets and survey homeless individuals about topics ranging from health care utilization to perceived quality of services received.
The Council's Research Coordinating Committee (RCC) is consulting with NCAB on developing a rigorous research process to explore the prevalence and impact of violence among individuals experiencing homelessness. Study results may yield data with implications for health care policy and practice. The Council submitted a research application to the Nashville Metropolitan Public Health Department Institutional Review Board (IRB). If approved, NCAB Chair Amy Grassette will be
the study's principal investigator.

Chronic Pain Management In response to clinical priorities established by the HCH Clinicians' Network, the Network Steering Committee embarked on a project to explore issues around pain management. After discovering a gap in pain management guidelines for the care of homeless patients, the committee decided to survey HCH clinicians nationwide regarding chronic pain management practices, knowledge, attitudes and resources.
RCC members and the Network Steering Committee developed a questionnaire that will be available online once approved by the University of Colorado's IRB. Lisa Thompson, DNP, PMHNP-BC, RCC co-chair, is the project's principal investigator. Lisa will co-present a workshop on this topic during the 2010 National Health Care for the Homeless Conference & Policy Symposium in June.
Traumatic Brain Injury
In February, the HCH PBRN submitted a research proposal to the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality for a $100,000 grant to study the prevalence and impact of traumatic brain injuries in homeless patients. The HCH PBRN invited its members to participate in this pilot study, and ten organizations submitted letters of support for the grant application.
If funded, the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program will serve as
lead agency with Carol Waldmann, MD, as principal investigator. Other researchers
serving as study consultants include - Stephen Hwang, MD, MPH, Toronto
- Lillian Gelberg, MD, MSPH, Los Angeles
- Pamela Diamond, PhD, Houston
- Barbara Wismer, MD, MPH, San Francisco
The Council thanks everyone who came together to develop this grant application; we anticipate hearing from AHRQ in May. Clinical Outcome Measures
The Council recently submitted a
proposal to the Health Resources & Services Administration to conduct a feasibility study to identify and
develop clinical outcome measures specific to homeless individuals seeking
care at HCH projects and medical respite care facilities. Once the Council obtains funding, staff will invite PBRN members to participate in the study. Council Website Improvements

| NEW RESEARCH REVIEW BOARD | |
Migrant Clinicians Network Institutional Review Board Many researchers in the health care for the homeless field will be interested to discover that the Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) operates its own IRB. MCN is a national, nonprofit organization providing training and technical assistance to migrant health centers and clinicians who deliver health care services to migrant and other mobile medically underserved patients.
MCN's IRB accepts proposals from anyone wishing to conduct research with human subjects. This is a valuable resource for HCH projects interested in conducting research but lacking affiliations with academic institutions where most research review boards are housed. Visit the MCN website for information on how to submit a research proposal.
