Automated turning and then some . . .

There are many good reasons for automated turning (high-to-medium volume, hard-to-find skilled labor, utilizing your current work force more efficiently etc.).  One of many advantages in partnering with Murata is you can take full advantage of our engineering and design team to make the most of an automated lathe.

A case in point, one of my customers wanted "no part handling" within the cell. Their vision was to forklift in a stack of raw parts and back out with a pallet full of finished parts. They wanted better throughput, less scrap and faster changeover for their family of parts, along with single source accountability of the whole system.

MW200G

Our solution was a MW200GS lathe with secondary automation, vision system, part orientation, post process gaging and the ability to pull from different dunnage for their parts family.

Murata incorporated a Fanuc robot with vision system to find the parts on the pallet once they were fork lifted into the cue station. The robot arm then re-orients the part based on a feature on the OD so it is loaded consistently into the custom workholding.

After the turning operation, our gantry places the part in a PPG which gages and sends offset info to the machine control.  From that point, the Fanuc robot picks up the finished part from the PPG and loads a finished pallet.  The system also detects when the finished part pallets are full so levels of pallets have a consistent number of parts for easy inventorying.  Changeover to another part consists of end-of-arm tooling for the Fanuc robot and our "program select switch" within the Murata control which changes the machining program and the gantry loader program with the push of a button.

The result realized a 30% increase in productivity due to the automation, parts scrap fell because of repeatability of the automation.  By eliminating operator fatigue factor, changeover time decreased by 35%, better safety and ergonomics were realized and cost per part was lowered.
