Greetings!

Welcome to this issue of Murata News, a monthly newsletter focused on providing our turning customers and contacts with helpful information and the latest news from Murata.

This month's issue includes details about a project we worked on with SEW-Eurodrive and Jeff Kalmbach's article on retooling may give you some great options for dealing with idle machines or machines that need retooling to survive this economy.

SEW-Eurodrive Increases Productivity with MW200G

Providing machining solutions that make a difference gives us great pride.  Sharing ideas through the experience and success of others is a great way to learn, so we'd like to tell you about the results of a project with SEW-Eurodrive.  SEW-Eurodrive, located in Lyman, SC, is a leading manufacturer of integrated power transmission and motion control systems.

SEW was interested in CNC machinery that would improve the quality and productivity of their machining process.  In the past, their operators would manually load and unload a four-axis lathe for OP 10 and OP 20 for all operations.

Murata recommended a MW200 model that could utilize the internal gantry automation to load, unload and machine the gear blanks.  The MW200 is also able to change over and accommodate a wide range of part sizes.

SEW realized a 25-30% increase in productivity due to the automation.  The automation also allowed the operator time to operate more than one cell.  Scrap parts decreased because of repeatability of the automation and the machining process. Change over time decreased by 30-35%.

Safety was enhanced as operator fatigue was lessoned and the automation system was better ergonomically for the operator.

Murata Retooling

By Jeff Kalmbach, Engineering Manager

Does your facility have idle machines?  Do you have available capacity on existing machines?  Do you want to changeover existing machines to run new parts?  Murata Machinery USA can help!

Murata Machinery USA offers a full range of retooling services for existing machines.  The following are two recent examples of retooling projects performed by MMUSA.

The first was a very involved retool of two MW120 machines.  Both machines had been running production for more than five years and each had logged more than 7,000,000 cycles.

Both machines were returned to our Charlotte facility and  evaluated by our Service Department to identify any parts needing replacement.  After evaluation, a few minor parts were replaced, totaling less than $14,000 including labor for installation.  After the machine evaluation, the retooling work was completed and included:
  • an addition of a new work feeder table, combining the machines into a two machine automated cell
  • addition of a parts transfer station between the two machines
  • installation of all tooling and full automation prove out of the automated cell
The retooled machines were installed at the customer facility and MMUSA Applications technicians were onsite to prove out the automated cell.

All work for the second retooling project was completed at the customer's facility.  This customer was running multiple MW200 machines and decided to changeover the machines for new parts.  MMUSA provided new workholding, gantry tooling, additional feeder tables, and an outfeed conveyor system.  The setup and installation of all new components were completed on site at the customer's facility
.

Other examples of retooling projects that MMUSA can provide:
  • changing of machines from an OP10/OP20 process to an OP10/OP10 process
  • adding a work feeder table to load an existing machine
  • providing new workholding or gantry tooling to run new parts
  • commonizing workholding and tooling to allow for running of multiple part numbers
  • addition of a post process gage or other peripheral equipment to an existing machine
  • conversion of two independent machines into an automated two machine cell
  • and many others, just ask!

If you are in need of changeover or retooling for any of your existing Murata machines, please contact Jeff Kalmbach, Engineering Manager (704-875-9280, Ext. 279) to discuss how MMUSA can assist with your needs.
