Introducing New Column
Spiritual Formation By Betty Southard
The CLASSEMINARS leadership team has committed to encouraging the Spiritual growth of our constituency. To do so, we will be focusing on Spiritual Formation. This may be a new term for you, you may be somewhat familiar with it or you may have already been engaged in it personally. Every month, we plan to have a helpful article to encourage you in this process.
What do we mean when we say, "Spiritual Formation?" Basically it is the process of personally being conformed to the image of Christ. It is learning to walk daily with Jesus. It is powered by the Holy Spirit. We cannot do this on our own. We have the power of choice in that we surrender the control of our lives, willingly, over to Jesus, asking that the Spirit work in us to "be like Jesus."
It is not something we can "pray" into our life. It will not happen immediately. It is a lifelong process. It is not something we do solo. We learn and grow through interaction with others from whom we get encouragement, strength, love and teaching. In this regard, we will do all we can to facilitate that growth in ourselves and for each of you.
You are no doubt familiar with the popular slogan of several years ago, What Would Jesus Do (WWJD). Most of us judge ours and others' Spiritual growth, based on that question. Let me suggest that true Spiritual Formation, while it will include what we do, really focuses on HWJB, How would Jesus Be, in this situation. What would be His attitude, actions, thoughts, and feelings? How do my actions and reactions measure up to His?
We are not looking to set up another group of laws, designed to get you to follow a legalistic relationship with the Lord, or with CLASSEMINARS. We are calling you to the life Christ offers: "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)
It is transformation within our hearts, souls, minds and spirit. We will share with you ways that have been helpful to others, encouraging you in your pilgrimage. Remembering Paul's encouragement in Philippians 1:6: "He (Jesus Christ) who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow until His task within you is finally finished, on that day when the Lord Jesus Christ returns." (LB)
I am eagerly embarking on this journey and I invite each of you to join me.

Telling It Like It Is
People love inspiring stories. Biographies of the down-and-out who make great use of a second chance tend to top best-seller lists. But few people have a life of such drama-most of us are quite ordinary. Sadly, some believers think that being a "regular Joe" makes their testimony unexciting and therefore less valuable. Nothing could be farther from the truth. What the Lord has done for any of us is just as extraordinary as what He did for the redeemed drug dealer, murderer, or prostitute.
A personal testimony is a way of expressing what God has done and is doing in one's life. It is a powerful tool for getting an unbeliever interested in spiritual matters. No matter how commonplace our words may sound compared to someone else's, the Lord will see to it that they impact the hearers who need them.
Let me give you an example. Suppose a six-year-old girl named Tina receives salvation. When she is 18, she will be able to tell her friends of God's greatness. She can explain that He makes the gospel clear to a child and yet reveals something new to her every day. When Tina is 80, she will have a lifetime of service opportunities to relate. Her testimony may not be exciting according to the world's criteria, but it is spiritual gold.
You have no idea how far-reaching your "ordinary" testimony can be. God says that His words will not return to Him without completing the work He sent them to do (Isa. 55:11). When believers share their faith, they are carrying His gospel to a needy world. And the story of Jesus' saving grace is always inspiring. In Touch MagazineCopyright May 2009 by Dr. Charles F. WRITER'S CORNER

A Suitcase of Prayers
by Florence LittauerMy husband Fred prayed every day. He wrote his prayers in spiral notebooks in black ink and when the Lord spoke to him and gave him answers, he wrote those words in red. If he told you he would pray for you, he meant it. I saw him take out his notebook in countries all over the world. When he died he left behind a black suitcase full of his prayer notebooks, each written neatly and dated on the cover.
Fred also prayed on the phone with people in distress, with those that had suffered childhood traumas, with those that doctors and counselors couldn't help. Fred prayed and lives were changed. I had six of these people speak at Fred's funeral and give testimony of his care for them. It's been almost seven years. Does anyone remember?
God does not always answer our prayers the moment we offer them. It can take years to see the answers, to see the fruit of our prayers.
Over the years, I've seen Cindy go from a very disturbed young girl to an accomplished well-balanced adult. She manages the optometry department in a Walmart in the state of Washington. A few weeks ago she called me and invited me to go to the Lion King with her when she would be in Las Vegas. At dinner, she said, "I can never thank Fred for what he did for me, but I can take you out each time I come to Las Vegas."
Recently I received a phone call from Deborah, who had come to CLASS twice. She said her husband, Jerry, had spent a day with Fred years ago that had changed his life. Jerry travels with Yanni, the pianist. That night Yanni was performing in Las Vegas. Would I like to go? Jerry arranged free tickets for my daughter-in-law Kristy and I to see a spectacular show. Jerry shared how he was in a depressed condition one time when I was speaking in his town. His wife told me about the problem and I put him in touch with Fred. They spent the next day together in prayer and the Lord lifted his pain. "I could never repay Fred for what he did for me, but if I can give you an evening of enjoyment, that blesses me."
When I shared these two experiences with Gerry, she shared another blessing with me. She had been in San Antonio with some of our CLASS staff attending a conference. While there they spent some time with Nancy, a CLASS graduate. Fred had counseled and prayed with Nancy. "It changed my life," she said. Nancy asked Gerry to give me special thanks for what Fred had done for her.
Fred had a quiet ministry of prayer most people never knew about except those he prayed with whose lives were changed. I thank the Lord for giving me these three blessings, the evidence of changed lives to add to all those in Fred's prayer books. My inheritance from Fred includes not only the prayer books stored in the black suitcase in my garage, but a continuous fount of blessings as those he touched and prayed for remember and live on.

Several months ago I uncovered an ancient cardboard box wedged in the back of my father's closet. Inside were the remnants of his military service: a good conduct medal, his wings, war department ID, aircraft spotters' guide, a 1943 Christmas menu from headquarters in Fortaleza, Brazil, and the letter notifying my grandparents that my father was a prisoner of war. In a daring endeavor, he eventually escaped through the Underground.
Candy's Dad, Asbury Neely
When my father returned to America, he didn't talk much about his experiences. He packed the pain in a mental compartment similar to the cardboard box that housed the history of his military service.
Years later, my cousin was accepted at the US Air Force Academy. The summer before his freshman year, my father bought Wesley a pair of military dress shoes, took him out to our driveway, and taught him to march. "I want him to be a step ahead of the other boys," Daddy said.
Daddy also hauled out war stories, dusted them off, and told about his experiences. He identified with the challenges Wesley faced in the next four years.
Often, when we go through difficult life situations, we swallow the hurt and consign the pain to a private corner of our minds and hearts. Some stagnate in grief. But 2 Corinthians 1:4 reminds us that we are to minister to those around us with the same comfort we've received from God. My father didn't share his experiences until my cousin embarked on a similar journey.
Perhaps someone in your sphere of influence is struggling. Although the situation might not be identical to yours, your wisdom and encouragement may be of great benefit. Dredging up memories may result in discomfort, but despite the emotional pain, be available to support someone learning to march down a difficult path.

Thinking on Independence Day
by Linda JewellGrowing up in a family of storytellers, I never viewed history as dry facts and dates, but stories about flesh-and-blood men and women.
Fascinated, in grade school, I learned that George Washington wore a wig and wooden false teeth. I could rattle off that he led the Continental Army and served as our nation's first president.
Years later, I discovered he embodied living faith.
Washington's letters and proclamations depict the life of a devout Christian: active in his local church; humble in seeking God's will for our nation through prayer, fasting, and reading Scripture; thankful for God's Providence; and encouraging soldiers, public officials, and citizens to honor our Maker.
We've just celebrated our nation's 233rd birthday. Acknowledging today's threats on all sides, let us prepare our hearts, and repair to prayer after pondering President George Washington's conviction:
"I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them."
More than two centuries after his death, Washington's Prayer for Americans lives on:
"Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection; and Thou wilt incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordinating and obedience to Government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
May we all follow George Washington's example and thank God for His providence and protection.

CLASSEMINARS' President Gerry Wakeland advises speakers to partner with professionals who edit and package audio recordings. "We're fortunate when we work with professionals who seek the heart of God, comprehend what we're trying to accomplish, and understand ministries."
She encourages speakers to use audio recordings both as promotional tools and as products to sell. "Your recordings should not be good. They should be excellent. A bad promotional audio does you more harm than good. Often we, or our savvy teenagers, can duplicate our recordings. However, our inferior results are competing against professionally packaged products to catch eyes and capture hearts."
John Thurman, known as the Get-A-Grip guy, agrees. "You can do it cheap-but it looks cheap."
Peter Benson, a respected Christian voice in radio for 40 years, has worked with all aspects of audio-production technology. He understands ministries in general, and speakers and writers in particular. His wrap-around production services include editing and adding leaders and trailers. Speakers maintain all copyrights when Benson helps them self-publish their audio projects. With his God-given "radio voice," he also "reads" audio books for writers.
Thurman maintains an on-going professional relationship with Benson. "Peter knows my heart beat and what I need to sound like. Where I speak about depression on one of my recordings, he added soft, sad music. My message ends on a hopeful note so Peter included some upbeat cool jazz in the rollout. Sometimes I go on rabbit trails or make a comment the live audience understands but doesn't make sense to someone listening to the recording. Peter has a good feel for what to edit out and what to leave in. He's reliable and trustworthy."
At a recent speaking event, Thurman offered pre-packaged recordings for sale. His total investment in one audio master plus cover-art by a professional graphic artist totaled $225. Thurman sold 30 copies of this one message at $15 each. In comparison, another qualified speaker sold three copies of a home-made recording at $5 each.
Partnering with professionals positively impacts Thurman's bottom line. Of greater importance, more audience members take home the message to listen to again or to share with others.
"Record every presentation," Thurman advises, "Listen a couple of times to the ones your audience has responded to well. If it's worth the investment, contact Peter to get professional-grade audio masters."
CLASSEMINARS, Inc. is pleased to partner with professionals, Peter Benson can be contacted at 505.344.0606 or peterbenson@comcast.net.

EXCITED!
"I'm excited about the explosion of new energy and ideas in the "new" CLASSEMINARS. I look forward to the writers conference in November."
|
THANK YOU!
"I am a graduate from a CLASSeminar held in Arizona, and also from Upper CLASS held in Destin, Florida. This training prepared me for EVERY ministry and speaking opportunity that I ever had or ever will have. Because of the training I experienced through CLASS and God's Holy Spirit, my speaking ministry has grown.
In the fall I will be speaking in Kansas and then next year in New York. Because of the CLASS training, I developed a personal website separate from the ministry I am President of. This was a recommendation that was greatly beneficial in my life. There is no way I can thank Florence, Marita and all the CLASS Team for the GREAT TRAINING I received!"
