Introducing the CLASSEMINARS Founder's Board
By Florence Littauer, Founder
When Gerry asked me to choose people for a Founder's Board, I came up with some bubbly sanguines that I would have fun with. She did not listen to my impulsive list, and replied, "This is not a social club of your fluffy friends, but a group of substantial individuals who will be available to us to give wise counsel. That turned my mind in a different direction and I got serious. We needed people of a wide span of vocations who were not regular staff members but objective outsiders who would be willing to share opinions and creative ideas for our ministry's future. We were delighted with the strong affirmative response we received and are thrilled with the first Founder's Board of CLASSEMINARS:
Dwight Bain Emilie Barnes Dr. Gary Billingsley Walter Boldt Pat Damon Evelyn Davison Daryl Lloyd Beverly Sallee Rose Sweet Dr. Craig von Buseck
*****************************
On Sunday May 31st I listened to Joel Osteen who was encouraging his listeners to give God their best not their leftovers. He used a verse from Malachi that I do not remember seeing before. He quoted the words of the Lord from Malachi 3:10 (NIV), "Trust me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so many blessings that you will not have room for them all."Joel added that when we wholeheartedly dedicated ourselves to God's use He will respond, "Not a trickle, not a stream, not even a river, but He will open the floodgates of blessing upon us."I've taken this thought for my future with CLASS. I don't want to be a trickle believer or even a deep river leader. I'm dedicating my life to be coming a floodgate Christian whose faith will splash over unto others. Will you join me? Florence

IN HONOR OF OUR FATHERS
Daddy's Prayer Bench
My dad lives on a farm. "Come on out when you have a minute. We'll sit on the porch and watch the grass grow!" he says. Daddy is on the tractor while most of us are still dreaming! At the end of a long day, you can find Daddy sitting in the swing on the porch. "Don't you know the Lord owns the cattle on a thousand hills. And He's right out here on the farm looking after them!" he says. One day Daddy had a visitor at the farm. Ten-year-old Brad's "big brother" brought him to the farm to fish. There aren't many "rules" at the farm but if you come to fish in Daddy's pond, you have to bring a child to fish with you! After Brad put his pole away, Daddy asked him if he'd like to see the river. Daddy's prayer bench sits on the crest of a hill by the river. He cleared just enough space by the old tree to place a cement bench. Once you sit on the bench and listen to the soft gurgle of the water, you forget you are just a few miles from town. When they arrived at Daddy's favorite spot, Brad looked at the prayer bench. "What's that?" he asked pointing to the bench. "That's my prayer bench," Daddy told him. "What's it for?" "Well," Daddy said, "I come down here to sit and talk to the Lord." "What d'ya talk about?" "Just depends. If things have been going pretty good, I thank Him. If I'm having a problem, I ask Him what to do about it. If I can't think of anything to talk about, I just sit here with Him for a while." Brad nodded his head. Without a word got out of the truck and sat down on the bench facing the river. Daddy just sat there, waiting for God to speak to this troubled little boy. I know he's at the right place to meet you, Lord. After about ten minutes, Brad stood, picked up a rock, tossed it into the river, and turned toward the truck. Daddy waited patiently as Brad climbed back in his seat. "Feel better?" Daddy asked. Brad looked sideways at Daddy and grinned. "You know, I think I do." Linda Gilden enjoys spending time on the farm with her father because he always has time for a good story!

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

For years, my prayers were scattered. I'd start with the crisis of the day, then mentally spin off to groceries I needed or calls I had to make. Then I'd nod off for a short nap and wake with the resolution to "pray harder" next time.
That all changed the day I leafed through a stack of family photographs and found myself praying for each person pictured. As I looked at my children's smiling, hope-filled faces, asking God to bless and protect them felt effortless. I prayed He'd put their dreams within reach, strengthen their relationship to him, and keep their hearts and actions pure.
This time I couldn't stop praying. The next day I grabbed the photos and designed a system to motivate me in prayer.
Prayer Pages
I bought a small scrapbook and pasted a photo of a specific person on each left-hand page. On the corresponding right-hand page, I wrote broad prayer request categories of how I wanted to pray for that person.
I designated the first spread for me. So next to my smiling portrait, I listed all the ways I want God to work in and through me - to help me obey His nudges, be the best wife possible, maintain healthy relationships with my children, and spread Jesus' love. Then I listed themes: health issues, church involvement, work goals, financial integrity, and other big-ticket items.
I placed my husband's photo on the next spread. As I looked at him, I was easily able to focus and pray down my list: for his passion for God, for his mentoring of our children, for his wisdom and discernment at work, for his continued spiritual growth.
Next came my children. I created a different prayer list based on each child's unique personality. but I gave them all these common themes: a strong relationship to God, wisdom for life choices, purity with the opposite sex, preparation for marriage and work, and involvement in Christian community.
After the family pages, I designated spreads for our extended family, my church small group, and a few close friends. The last section was for current prayer requests: the couple who were getting married, the guy from church who was fighting brain cancer, a friend's daughter who was struggling with her faith. And often when people would ask me to pray for them, I'd say yes and ask for a photo. There in the back section, that photo would remind me to actually keep my promise.
Colorful and Portable
The photo prayer journal has helped me focus on asking God to do bigger work in each individual's life, not just to help on a math test or heal a cold. I keep the lists short - limited to what seems important for the particular season.
This prayer method is great because I can use it while I'm spending time with God in the morning or while I'm standing in line at the grocery store. Waiting for an appointment or even sitting at a long stoplight is enough time to cover a page or two. Whether it's a quick run through the list or a longer, more focused prayer session, I connect with God for my family in whatever time I have available.
I've used this journal for more than a decade now. Each fall, I've rewritten the lists and updated the photos. And every day, I still get excited to open this book and start praying.

WRITER'S CORNER

The Modern Day (Real Life) Indiana Jones
by Vic Johnson
One of my life's most valuable possessions is my journal. Why? Because my journal contains my dreams! And my dreams are my future!
I learned this principle from a story about a 15 year old boy by the name of John Goddard. John, one day, happened to hear his parents and another adult talking, and the other adult had been telling John's parents about how miserable his life was and how much he had failed. He wished he was John's age again and could live his life over and do some things differently. Well, John heard the anguish in his voice, I suppose, and he made a vow that he was going to do something at 15 years old. So at 15 years old he took out a legal pad and began to write the things he wanted to do in his life, what he wanted to accomplish. Before he was finished he had 127 things on his list. He called it, "My Life List". Today John is in his late 70's. Of his original 127 goals, John over the last 55-60 years has accomplished 111 of them, plus 400 other ones that he set along the way. And just so you know these weren't some small goals, here are some of the goals that John Goddard has accomplished that were on his list: - He's climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, he's climbed Mount Ararat, in fact, he's climbed every major peak in the world. Now just that, how many people just doing that, would be one great life experience? But that's just one of 500+ for John Goddard. - He took Marco Polo's route through all of Asia and China. - He ran a mile in five minutes, he broad jumped 15 feet, high jumped five feet, and so on... - He was the first person to explore the entire 4,200 mile length of the Nile River (that was his number one goal!). When he was 15 years old, no person had ever done it, but that fifteen year old boy didn't know that, it didn't matter to him. He put it on his list and when he did it, USA Today named him the modern day Indiana Jones. He's been down not just the Nile River. He's been down the Amazon, down the Congo, etc. - He's been to 122 countries and lived with 260 different tribes. - He's explored the Reefs of Florida, the Great Barrier Reefs and so on... - He's flown 40 different types of aircrafts. Still holds civilian air speed records. Just that alone would be a great life experience; that was just one of John Goddard's goals. - He's read the Bible cover to cover. - He's taught himself French, Spanish, Arabic (who reading this could not learn a foreign language in the next couple of years?). And that is just a portion of over 500 dreams that John Goddard has accomplished. I hope we all learn from John Goddard! Here are two major points that were impressed upon me: 1) John Goddard's goals (dreams) were written down. How many of you have heard that before, to write your goals and dreams down? Because for 20 years I heard it and I had never written mine down, until just three years ago. Brian Tracy says if you'll write your goals down you have a 100 times greater chance of success, just by writing them down. Now I look at that mathematically and then by an inverse way, from an opposite way. What it says to me that if I don't write my goals down, I only have a 1 in 100 chance of succeeding. Write your goals and dreams down. 2) His dreams were BIG! I've found that a small dream will not give you the bullet proofing you are going to need. A small dream won't protect you when bad times come. A small dream does not have any power at all - it has to be BIG! So get started today! Go get a journal (or wipe the dust off the one you have) and write down your BIG goals! And then get started on your life story! To subscribe, go to www.JimRohn.com. Dan Penwell Scholarship
By John and Angie Thurman
Fellow writers and friends of CLASSEMINARS, I first met Dan Penwell and his wife Gloria several years ago at the Glorieta Christian Writers Conference in New Mexico. As a first-timer, I knew nothing about writing and even less about the industry. Since it was my first conference, I didn't know what to do or how to schedule appointments, much less whose classes I should attend. My new friend Lee Warren told me that Dan taught one of the best classes for first timers, so off I went.
Dan unpacked a ton of practical and insightful information and when the class finished, he spent extra time with me. Later that evening, our wives met each other and a relationship began. Dan and Gloria continue to be a source of encouragement and inspiration for Angie and me. When he asked for my first book proposal, I cleaned it up and sent it off to him. Within a few weeks, I received the kindest rejection letter that I have received to date. It did not resemble any standard type of rejection letter, but instead offered compliments, ideas, and encouragement, along with "at this time we are not publishing." I've since learned that many other writers prize their personal rejection letter from Dan, too. An editor that takes the time to encourage, reassure, and cheer aspiring writers is a treasure indeed. Dan and Gloria have loved and encouraged Christian writers for years, and though Dan has been fighting some health challenges, he presses on in his ministry of encouragement. The Board of Directors of CLASSEMINARS along with the Leadership Team of the CLASS Christian Writers Conference wants to recognize Dan and Gloria and say "thank you" for the years they have invested into the lives of aspiring writers. In our prayerful discussions, we feel that the best way to honor Dan and Gloria's work with Christian writers and the years of teaching, mentoring, and encouraging is to provide scholarships to the CLASS Christian Writers Conference through the newly established Dan Penwell Scholarship Fund. Our gift along with yours will help writers who have a dream to share God's message but who face some financial hardships due to the economy. Would you help us honor Dan and encourage other writers? Your gift is tax deductible and will be exclusively used to provide scholarships for writers. You can join us in honoring Dan with a contribution to the Dan Penwell Scholarship Fund. Your contribution is tax deductible. Please send your check made payable to CLASS and noted for the Dan Penwell Scholarship Fund to: CLASSEMINARS, Post Office Box 36551, Albuquerque, NM 87176. Be sure to check next month's CLASS Communiqué for scholarship guidelines.
