DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

Go Fishby Louis Lotz
"Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." John 21:6
"Children, you have no fish, have you?" The disciples answer "No," and often, so do we. Some of us, we've been fishing all night, fishing all our lies, and we have little to show for it. We work hard ar out jobs, our relationships, but often it seems like our nets are empty We're making a living, but are we making a life, the life we really want? Jesus offers a solution: "Cast the net to the right side of the boat." Try something new. Something different. Do you seriously believe that you can keep doing what you've always done, the way you've always done it, and that somehow the results will be different? "Cast the net to the right side of the boat." Jesus offers us permission, the power, and the possibility to do things differently. What would fishing from the other side of the boat look like for you? Perhaps a new job, or a new way of doing the old one? Maybe a new relationship, or a new way of acting in the old relationship? If your nets are empty, if life seems unfulfilled, try the other side of the boat. Look at it this way: What do you have to lose? Lord, help me to change in my life what needs changing.

SPEAKER'S TIPS
Learn from Google. They know something about the presentation of information. They took the chaotic information soup of the Internet and presented the information in the way that people want. Google didn't invent this but they are the number one search engine. Why is Google so popular and how can you apply these lessons to your presentation? 1. Don't waste timeYour audience is on Google time. Get started on time and get to your point quickly. Imagine how quickly Google would die if people had to wait minutes instead of seconds for search results. 2. Prioritize your informationPut your most important points first. Why? Because if you lead with weak points your audience will tune you out by the time you get to the good stuff. Internet marketers attempt to get top Google rankings because most people only pay attention to the top three search results. 3. Focus on topicOne presentation = one purpose. Stay on topic and deliver one message. If your purpose is to sell the idea then focus on the benefits. Don't get bogged down on the logistics. When you search for "how to improve golf game" you don't want to read about the history of the game. If you try to deliver more than one message you will sabotage yourself. Google penalizes websites that try to mislead the search engines. Deliver your presentation like an Internet search engine.

MARKETING MOMENT

A New Guide to Social Media Marketing
I've
resisted many of the tools of social media because they appear to be a
huge time zapper. Yet repeatedly as I've experimented with the tools,
I've found huge benefits and returns on my investment -- often in
surprising ways. Paul Gillin is an expert in this medium and you can
learn a vast amount of insight from the pages of Secrets of Social Media Marketing. And
my resistance? It is rooted in my resistance to change. Gillin writes
in the introduction, "Embracing change is the only sure success
strategy in a business world that is evolving faster than we have ever
known. Students of the information technology industry know that
failure to adapt to change can obliterate even larger and successful
companies with blinding speed. In this book, I'll make the case that
the changes now roiling the marketing world are the best thing that's
ever happened to the profession. Start embracing these changes now, and
you'll propel your company and your career to new heights. Deny them,
and you'll watch as the skills that have served you well for many years
move rapidly toward irrelevance."
That
quotation rings true from my experience in the market. It's a small
sample of what you will find inside this book. Throughout the book,
various secrets are emphasized in simple words. He refers to many
websites and tools to help you streamline and be effective with the
various social media possibilities. For example, in the chapter Basics
of Social Media Content, Gillin writes, "Keep it simple, make it
personal and give people a reason to pass it on." (Page 189) Make
full use of this book and return to it over and over. Read it with a
highlighter with flags so you can spot the relevant places to apply for
your own marketing efforts. My book is lined with these markers from
reading this well-crafted book.
I
resonated with what Gillin wrote toward the end of his introduction,
"Writing a book about a market that's changing so fast is like trying
to catch lightning in a bottle. Any book about this topic is out of
date the moment it is published, so I've attempted to distill the
lessons learned from the early successes of social media pioneers." He
has more than fulfilled this promise.
Throughout
this book, Gillin refers to numerous websites and tools. He's made the
process of using these tools simple with a website which captures every
detail with clickable links
and referenced throughout the book. If you can't tell, I got a great
deal from reading this book which I will be attempting to apply to my
own writing life in the days ahead. You can do likewise if you get and
read Secrets of Social Media Marketing.

"Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

PERSONALITY WORKSHOP REPORT There were many creative, innovative presentations from the 30 individuals from 11 states + Australia who attended last month's Personality Workshop in Henderson, NV.

"What an exceptional group we had at our recent Personality Training in
Henderson, NV! Everyone came with a strong desire to learn and their
eagerness made the teaching more fun than ever. Thank you all for
being shining stars in difficult days for our country." - Florence Littauer "Thank you SO much for the many ways you all poured yourselves out to encourage, equip, and empower me. The two small words of "thank you" are inadequate to express the gratitude I feel." - Debbie Potts

How the E-Book Will Change the Way We Read and Write
"2009 may well prove to be the most significant year in the evolution of the book since Gutenberg hammered out his original Bible."
Every genuinely revolutionary technology implants some kind of "aha" moment in your memory -- the moment where you flip a switch and something magical happens, something that tells you in an instant that the rules have changed forever. I still have vivid memories of many such moments: clicking on my first Web hyperlink in 1994 and instantly transporting to a page hosted on a server in Australia; using Google Earth to zoom in from space directly to the satellite image of my house; watching my 14-month-old master the page-flipping gesture on the iPhone's touch interface. The latest such moment came courtesy of the Kindle, Amazon.com Inc.'s e-book reader. A few weeks after I bought the device, I was sitting alone in a restaurant in Austin, Texas, dutifully working my way through an e-book about business and technology, when I was hit with a sudden desire to read a novel. After a few taps on the Kindle, I was browsing the Amazon store, and within a minute or two I'd bought and downloaded Zadie Smith's novel "On Beauty." By the time the check arrived, I'd finished the first chapter. Aha. I knew then that the book's migration to the digital realm would not be a simple matter of trading ink for pixels, but would likely change the way we read, write, and sell books in profound ways. It will make it easier for us to buy books, but at the same time make it easier to stop reading them. It will expand the universe of books at our fingertips, and transform the solitary act of reading into something far more social. It will give writers and publishers the chance to sell more obscure books, but it may well end up undermining some of the core attributes that we have associated with book reading for more than 500 years. There is great promise and opportunity in the digital-books revolution. The question is: Will we recognize the book itself when that revolution has run its course? The Dark Matter In our always-connected, everything-linked world, we sometimes forget that books are the dark matter of the information universe. While we now possess terabytes of data at our fingertips, we have nonetheless drifted further and further away from mankind's most valuable archive of knowledge: the tens of millions of books that have been published since Gutenberg's day. That's because the modern infosphere is both organized and navigated through hyperlinked pages of digital text, with the most-linked pages rising to the top of Google Inc.'s all-powerful search-results page. This has led us toward some traditional forms of information, such as newspapers and magazines, as well as toward new forms, such as blogs and Wikipedia. But because books have largely been excluded from Google's index -- distant planets of unlinked analog text -- that vast trove of knowledge can't compete with its hyperlinked rivals. But there is good reason to believe that this strange imbalance will prove to be a momentary blip, and that the blip's moment may be just about over. Credit goes to two key developments: the breakthrough success of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader, and the maturation of the Google Book Search service, which now offers close to 10 million titles, including many obscure and out-of-print works that Google has scanned. As a result, 2009 may well prove to be the most significant year in the evolution of the book since Gutenberg hammered out his original Bible. If so, if the future is about to be rewritten, the big question becomes: How? Read the rest of the article.NOTE: A new large-screen version of Kindle, designed for reading newspapers and magazines, debuted this month.
