New Organization Signing

Our Mission, Vision
and Core Values

by Gerry Wakeland, President

For over twenty years, I have followed the teachings of Dr. John Maxwell. As a young woman in church leadership I found much of what he taught valuable as I began to develop my own leadership philosophy and style.
Of all that I learned from John, perhaps most significant was the importance of mission, vision and core values. This is true in our personal ministry as well as in the ministries we are involved in.

MISSION

A mission statement describes what the organization does. It most often describes the overall purpose and is used to keep the organization on target. It is more about the day to day operations and decisions.
I will never forget John Maxwell discussing how decisions were made in his ministry. He told the audience that when he received an invitation to speak or participate in an event he looked critically at how it aligned with his mission and if it did not support the mission he respectfully declined. In doing so he probably missed out on some wonderful opportunities, but he was obedient to stay focused on the mission God had given him.

The Mission of CLASSEMINARS

First, and foremost, we are a training organization. As the premier Christian communicators training organization, CLASSEMINARS, Inc. equips and encourages aspiring and established leaders, authors, speakers and all other individuals desiring to communicate with excellence.

VISION

A vision statement addresses the big picture. It is a snapshot of the organization in the future. It is designed to be inspirational and lead you forward in your strategic planning.

Our Vision

It is the vision of CLASSEMINARS, Inc. to take leadership and communication training to every continent, equipping the body of Christ to fulfill The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

CORE VALUES
The core values of an organization are the foundation upon which the organization is built. They are not values that change from time to time or situation to situation. They are the essential and enduring beliefs of the organization. They are the glue that holds the organization together.

Our Core Values
Vibrant Faith
Integrity (Honesty & Ethics)
Authenticity
Personal Growth (Spiritual, Emotional, Intellectual, and Social)
Excellence
Heart for Ministry
Leadership That Guides and Inspires

As CLASSEMINARS moves into the future you will see  the plans that we make, the programs we develop and business conducted will be tied directly to our mission, our vision and our core values.

If you have not developed a mission statement, vision statement and core values for yourself and your ministry, I encourage you to do so. It will help define who you are and where you are going.

Houston CLASSeminar, March 9-11

The Lord moved in a mighty way during the Houston CLASSeminar. Approximately 35 people attended the CLASSeminar where Florence, the faculty and the fun-loving hospitality of Houston provided a special time in which to learn and refine speaking skills and re-focus on ministry pursuits. Five scholarships to attend were awarded.

Sharon Norris Elliot in Houston         Betty Southard in Houston

"I'm already putting some of the concepts into practice!"
- Lawrence Clark,
Houston, TX

"The CLASSeminar was so much more than I expected, and just what I needed. The lessons were relevant, the challenges shook me from my comfort zone, and the people with whom I shared those days left precious, lasting impressions upon my life. I wish that I would have attended CLASS years ago, when I first began to write and speak. I have every intention of sending my adult children to a CLASSeminar."
- Ronny Michel, New Orleans, LA

"The CLASSeminar was absolutely life changing. I learned valuable strategies to take my speaking and writing to a new level. I not only recommend CLASSEMINARS, but consider them a "must" for any serious speaker/writer."
 - Steve Austin, Director,
Pastoral Care Ministries,
Lakewood Church, Houston, TX

Talking Fingers

by John Thurman

One of the new skill sets I am adding to my life, although in somewhat of a clumsy manner, is texting. I am about as fast as syrup in the winter time, but I am learning to do it. Wow have we come a long way. Growing up in Fort Valley, Georgia in the 50's and 60's about all you had to communicate with was the wall phone in the kitchen; hey it did have a twenty-foot cord on it.
As a therapist, who is also a business/ministry consultant,  and baby boomer, I receive calls from business owners who are frustrated over communication issues in their businesses.
Companies' twenty-something Gen Yers consistently attempted to keep their Gen Xer and baby boomer co-workers in the loop by IMing (Instant Messaging) them.  The frustration arises when they find out their co-workers are not signing into the IM program on their work station computers.
Such is life in the world of a multigenerational workforce, in which highly experienced and seasoned baby boomers are working alongside tech-savvy twenty somethings who have high expectations and little experience.
Caught in the middle are the knowledgeable Gen Xers in their thirties and early forties who are struggling for work/life balance as they walk the tight rope of managing multigenerational work teams. Add to the mix of the modern workplace with its disappearing organizational charts and hierarchy and you have multiple opportunities for intergenerational conflict.
So with this in mind what are some ways we can better understand the multigenerational workforce, and apply to our businesses and ministries?

How they like to communicate:
  • Boomers - Email, cell phone and face to face
  • Gen X - Email, IM and cell phones
  • Gen Y - Texting, cell phones, IM, and Twitter
Approach to problem solving:
  • Boomers- Think about what's worked in the past, how it can be replicated, then call a meeting to talk about it
  • Gen X - Think up a list of solutions on your own, then call a meeting to discuss
  • Gen Y - Form a team to brainstorm solutions. Use the web and social networking for research
 What they're worried about:
  •  Boomers - Stability and retirement
  •  Gen X - Work/life balance, stability, whether they are   appreciated
  •  Gen Y - Constant advancement
  Respect for them means:
  • Boomers - Have decades of work experience and input still valued
  • Gen X - Having their professionalism and growing knowledge valued.
  • Gen Y - Having their ideas valued by their co-workers
In closing, perhaps the best things we can do to improve communication is to appreciate our different styles and modes of communication  and learn to respect and learn from each other.
I am grateful to my Gen Y kids and some of my younger clients for teaching me about new ways to use the technology. Let it be a building block not a barrier.

You Can Make
A Difference

by Gerry Wakeland

In the Spring of 1949 Florence Chapman graduated from the University of Massachusetts. That Fall she began teaching at Haverhill High School. Ms. Chapman was a popular teacher, she was innovative and creative. Her students loved her, especially the boys in her English class to whom she taught Shakespeare by having them act out the parts of "Big Julie" and "The Brute."
What makes a good teacher great? Just one thing. That is the passion to pour into the lives of others and to help them be better.
Sixty years later, Florence Chapman, now Florence Littauer, continues to be driven by this passion for excellence in communication and her love of teaching as she invests of herself, her training and her experience into the lives of others. As creator and founder of The CLASSeminar, Florence has trained over 30,000 men and women to share the message God has given them with excellence. She has fueled their passion with her own, spurring them on to impact the Kingdom with their words. She has made a difference.
In just a few weeks, Florence will celebrate another milestone, her birthday. Last year at this time we established
THE  FLORENCE LITTAUER  SCHOLARSHIP FUND,
to assist men and women in ministry with the tuition of The CLASSeminar. Your generous and loving gifts totaled almost $20,000. Throughout this past year, we have been privileged to award a number of scholarships to deserving people, people who we trust will make a difference for the Kingdom.
As we prepare once again to celebrate Florence's birthday, we invite you to join us in honoring her in a way that make a significant difference. If your life has been touched by Florence, if her teaching has helped you become the speaker or writer that you are today, or if she has spurred you on to excellence in your ministry, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a contribution to:
    THE FLORENCE LITTAUER SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
Please make your check, for any amount, payable to CLASS, and send to:
CLASS
Post Office Box 36551
Albuquerque, NM  87176

*Your contribution is tax-deductible and will be used only
towards scholarships for The CLASSeminar.

Robin Stanley

Tight-Fisted Times

by Robin Stanley

In the chaos of a food heist gone bad, Remy's clan scrambles toward the safety of their "life boats" near the river. But Remy, unwilling to abandon his quest, returns to the old lady's shelf for Gusteau's prized cookbook. Dodging rifle bullets, Remy races to the river's edge, pitches his book into the current, and paddles for his life.

Still, no matter how fast his tiny rat paws pull through the water, his dad's outstretched hand drifts further and further out of reach.

"Dad!" As Remy's cries for help fade, he suddenly plunges into the sewers beneath Paris. A wild ride ensues until the torrents deposit him at the edge of the retaining wall.
Tired. Hungry. Alone. Until his imagination brings to "life," an illustration of the beloved Chef Gusteau. Remy quietly shares his despair: "I just lost my family . . . all my friends . . . probably forever."

Then Gusteau, in his warm and winsome way, confers a profound piece of wisdom: "If you're focused on what you've left behind, you will not be able to see what lies ahead."
This scene from Disney's Ratatouille played fresh in my mind after recent conversations with friends. Each person expressed a different story, but every story led to the same conclusion: life is out of control.

The bank calls. A neighbor dies. Our families need counseling. Our ministries need downsizing. We're battling cancer, undergoing surgery, dealing with heartache, fighting injustice. The kids are failing; the past comes knocking. We can't live up. We can't keep up. We can't stop.

We paddle faster, stretch further . . . and suddenly, like Remy, overwhelmed and hurting, we spin headlong into the torrents of confusion. Gasping for breath, we grab onto anything within our reach.

Driven by our need for security, clutching becomes our first instinct. We wrap our fingers around the "familiar," the "safe," the "comfortable," and often the "hurtful," until every strand of every thread of life concedes to the tucking. Finally, we dare utter to ourselves, everything is under control.

Until we land in a heap - white-knuckled, weary, alone.

What are you holding onto?
Money? Memories? Ministry? Moxie?

Where do you keep your hurts? Your disappointments? Few things make us feel as vulnerable as opening ourselves up just when we sense the need to wrap ourselves up.
But it's necessary.

Invite God into Your Tight-Fisted Times
Let Him uncurl your fingers and reveal Himself in your heap. He may show you something new! Worship Him, anticipating grace in His revelation.

Let Trusted Friends In
Surround yourself with the support of people who love you and will help care for your heart.

Ministry leaders, men and women of influence,  shepherds, communicators of the Gospel: Do you really want to be OK? To continue feeding your flock? To move forward with joy in what God has for you?

Remember Chef Gusteau's words of wisdom. Remy heard, opened himself up, moved forward and became a cook! The sewer he was in sat directly under the Chef's famous restaurant.

Stop focusing on what's behind you and look ahead. Allow God to give you something new as you minister in these tight-fisted times.

9 Secrets to Successful Collaboration

Want to write a book with someone else? Consider these guidelines to co-authoring before you put a single word on paper. Co-authoring can be a wonderful experience. It can also be a nightmare. By working with another writer who complements your abilities, you can save time and energy-as long as you set some ground rules upfront.
While working on the book Aftershock: Help, Hope and Healing in the Wake of Suicide, my co-author, David Cox, and I agreed on certain principles. He would contribute his personal story, plus insights from his years of counseling, and I would do the bulk of the writing. This setup worked well for us, and it's key that you find one suitable for you.
Without laying down rules on specific issues like division of labor, how to settle conflicts that arise during production and how to split the profits, you're liable to have constant problems (and a giant headache). Consider these 9 important issues to ensure a successful co-authoring relationship:
  1. Determine if overall goals are similar
  2. Decide if your personalities are compatible
  3. Benefit from your strengths
  4. Know your weaknesses
  5. Agree on a division of labor.
  6. Sign a co-authoring contract
  7. Expect some level of conflict
  8. Have a means of conflict resolution
  9. Reap the rewards of two heads

Servant Attitudes -
Servant Assignments

I used to think leadership was about bossing others around. But I'm discovering something new by watching those around me.
Florence Littauer selflessly sows into those she encourages to carry the charge to communicate effectively. Gerry Wakeland obediently accepts her God-assignment to re-focus CLASS, to a more ministry-minded organization. Betty Southard simultaneously leads and follows without missing a step. To be an effective leader, one needs a servant's heart, a servant attitude.

Abraham Lincoln said, "...if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

Nick Della Valle

You may remember Nick Della Valle's dramatic portrayal of a biblical scribe at the 2008 Glorieta Christian Writer's Conference.
I recently spoke with Della Valle, a missionary on the home front. With support from wife Lucy, Della Valle dons biblical garb as the character of Zacchaeus, and walks across America for Christ. He has walked from St. Augustine, FL to Garden Grove, CA, and from Philadelphia, PA to Albuquerque, NM, and is preparing for a third walk that begins soon. Another 3300 miles, or as he says, "100 miles for every year Christ walked the earth."

     Nick Della Valle

Picture
this. If you saw a man walking along the highway dressed in biblical attire, wouldn't you wonder why?

People can't help but ask:

Where are you coming from?
Where are you going to?
What's the point?

It's responsive envangelism, where you  create a non-confrontational situation so that people will ask you a question and you can respond. "All I can do is plant the seeds. Seeds of godliness, integrity, honesty and caring," Della Valle said. "I never see the end result, but then, I'm not in the results business. I'm in the obedience business. My only job is to say, 'yes.'"

Where are you coming from?
Where are you going to?
What's your point?

Della Valle listened when God said, "Let's do something together." He could have inserted his own ideas, or chosen the  podium instead of the side of a very long road, instead, his response was , "Yes, I'm with you, Lord. Count me in!"
Will you follow Him to unusual places in uncertain territory?
Philippians 2:5-8 encourages us to adopt Christ's servant attitude of unselfishness, humility and obedience. As Christian leaders with a Christ-like servant heart and attitude, we are the key that unlocks the prison doors on people's lives.
We see the fulfillment of the God-given vision of a new CLASSEMINARS. An organization with leaders who say, "Yes, I'm with you, Lord. Count me in!"
I see God bringing me to a place of quiet leadership. A place where I can sow those same seeds of godliness, integrity, honesty and caring.
I am thankful my CLASS training has taught me how to draw on my experiences to serve others in ministry.
How about you? As a Christian leader and communicator, you are positioned with a purpose. When God says, "Let's do something together," how will you respond?
If it is true that the best way to influence someone is by serving them, where is God calling you to serve?

"The highest destiny of the individual is
to serve
rather than to rule." - Albert Einstein

Where Are They Now?

Susy Flory

I recently caught up with

CLASS Grad Susy Flory

Tama:
Susy, please tell our readers about your new book.
SusySo Long Status Quo: What I Learned From Women Who Changed the World (Beacon Hill, 2009) is the powerful story of how nine amazing women inspired me, a suburban mom, to abandon my safe, sheltered vanilla existence for nine varied adventures modeled after the lives and accomplishments of women like Eleanor Roosevelt, Mother Teresa, Harriet Tubman, and Jane Austen.

Tama:  You were inpired to new adventures? Like what?
Susy:  After delving into the lives of these inspiring women,
I was challenged to embark on a quest for something more. What happened next? Cuba, welding, and jewelry for water, that's what!

Tama:  Cuba...welding...jewelry for water...what??
Susy:  You'll have to read the book to find out, haha.

Tama:  Funny...So how has the CLASS training helped you?
Susy:  I went through CLASS in '05 in Fresno, CA. Sharon Elliott was my group leader, and I've stayed in touch with her, as well as with Betty Southard. I loved the CLASS training and have enjoyed putting into practice what I learned.

Tama:  I understand you found a new success shortly after attending the CLASSeminar?
Susy:  Yes, the next year, my first book was released, Fear Not Da Vinci. It was about how to use The Da Vinci Code (and the ensuing controversy) to share your faith.

Tama:  Wow! I can see how CLASS may have helped there. We teach attendees how to take their own experience and tap into current events, to be relevant.
Susy:  My co-writer, Gini Monroe, and I created a Da Vinci Code seminar, and spoke to about 2000 people that year. Our CLASS training was invaluable and everything we had learned we used in our speaking and media opportunities!

Tama:  Sounds like you've implemented the lessons from CLASS into lots of new adventures!
Susy:  My CLASS experience also led to my meeting Kathi Lipp. We've become good friends and have done some networking and business together. She even asked me to be on her ministry advisory board.

Tama:  Thanks Susy, it's been fun catching up with you. Congratulations on your new book, and please keep us posted!
Susy:  Thanks Tama, I love the CLASS newsletter and I'm honored to have So Long Status Quo included. I'm excited to see where CLASS is going next!

Speaker Andrea ChevalierABOUT THE BOOK:  "Susy gives us a wonderful synopsis of the lives of nine amazing women and the tools needed to put those lessons into practice in our own lives. She weaves her own practical experiences into the story and challenges us to be creative and find ways to make a difference in today's world. A challenging and inspiring read, good for both individual and group study."

Recognizing
The Personalities
at a Glance

by Lessie Harvey

Weekly, my knowledge of The Personalities is refined as I meet and greet the 300+ women in my Bible Study class. As one of the first to arrive, I do what I can to make sure we meet the needs of everyone present. However, one day I was delayed and found myself met by the scrutiny of a Powerful Choleric waiting at the door eyes glued to her watch while her foot tapped the stone walk. "Thank you so much for being on time," I greeted her, understanding her need for praise. She smiled and quickly moved into the room, eager to get started.
The Perfect Melancholy arrives about ten minutes later. As usual, she looks great. Even her working shoes match her outfit. "Wow, you really have it altogether," I say. I glance at my feet and think of comfort, not style. She is always easy to identify because she already has her nametag on and is ready to follow the instructions.
As class members arrive, I continue identifying their visual Personality features to individualize my greeting.
Popular Sanguines are the easiest to spot. Their stylish clothing, constant conversation, and talking hands are a definite clue to their enthusiasm about life. I give them a hug and they quickly move on to the next conversation.
Then there's the Peaceful Phlegmatic. Her comfortable dress and pleasant smile lets me know she's right where she wants to be. She may be a little late, may have forgotten her Bible, lesson or nametag, but she's not stressed. I'm happy and she's happy.
One approach does not work for everyone. But my study of The Personalities has really helped me communicate effectively with everyone I meet.

Communication Plus book cover
As you seek to shape your message, start with something that's already
been written; a piece of inspiring literature, a definition of an appropriate word, or a passage of Scripture.
- Florence Littauer,
Communication Plus (Regal)

Schultze book cover
Human communication was meant to be based on humans' "response-ability" to God's commands. In fact, the Hebrew word for "listen" derives from "obedience." Good speakers must first be obedient listeners so they know what they are talking about.
- Quentin Schultze,
An Essential Guide to Public Speaking
(Baker Academic)
