Change!
It can happen so quickly. In just one second we go from one day to the
next, one month to the next, one year to the next. We watched this
happen a few weeks ago as we entered into a new year, 2009. Change
can also happen slowly. Most of us have experienced the ever so slow
change as we strive to take off those extra pounds that have crept upon
us over the holidays. Change can be celebrated with public ceremonies
and glamorous festivities as we witnessed when our new president took
office; or with pomp and circumstance such as the changing of the guard
at Buckingham Palace. Change can occur as simply and quietly as drawing
that one last breath when we depart this earth for our home in
paradise. However change appears, it is inevitable. When change
enters our lives it brings new circumstances, new details, new dreams,
and new visions. We often hear folks use this phrase, a new day is
dawning. And it's true. Even in the days of Isaiah this was true when
God told his people,
"Do not remember the former things, or
consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it
springs forth, do you not perceive it?" Isaiah 43:18-19
God predicts change. Most
people struggle with change. We like things the way they are; the way
we've always done them. However the world is changing and we have to
change along with it. Personally, I find myself energized by change.
It gives a chance to be better than we were, to look at doing things
differently, to dream new dreams and to follow the new vision God has
given us. For a number of months CLASS has been undergoing change.
It has been a slow, steady change. For the most part people did not see
what was happening. Behind the scenes Marita, Florence and I were
working on plans for the future. There were agonizing moments and there
were moments of great exhilaration as individually and corporately we
sought the Lord's will and direction. These decisions, and ultimately
the changes, have been bathed in prayer and we believe directed by the
Holy Spirit. Many of you, no doubt, have been praying for us as we
worked on these plans. Now it is time to make known the changes. Shortly
after the first of the year Marita and I divided the ministry of CLASS.
Marita will retain ownership of CLASServices, Inc. These offices will
remain in Albuquerque. She will continue operating the product sales
division. As of the first of the year, we have created a new
corporation, CLASSEMINARS, Inc. which will be a non-profit ministry
governed by a Board of Directors. This ministry will continue the
existing seminar programs, plus we will be adding a number of new
training programs this year. While the office for CLASSEMINARS, Inc. is currently in Albuquerque, you should expect to see them move to
Henderson, NV sometime this year. This will allow Florence to continue
to be involved with the ministry.
I see this as an exciting time
filled with new vision and full of opportunities. Our world needs Jesus
more. For almost thirty years God has used Florence, Marita and CLASS
as the vehicle to train men and women like yourselves to share God's
message with the world. We will continue to carry out the vision God
gave to Florence in 1980 with new energy, new urgency, new technology
and most importantly new God-given dreams. Watch for our new
website, coming soon. Stay in touch because we want you to be a part of this new
journey with us. God is about to do a new thing, do you not perceive it?

A Word from Florence
Humble Beginnings It was in 1980 that the Lord put it upon my heart that I needed to train others to become Christian speakers.
There were only 2 nationally known Christian women's speakers at that time. One was about to retire and the other was involved in indiscretions that brought her ministry to a halt. I thought, who will replace them? My speaking career had started when I was seven years old and recited in church a poem I had written about my baby brother. The little tribute was published in the Wee Wisdom Magazine and I was on my way. I took elocution lessons, won speech lessons in high school and college and taught speech at the University of Connecticut and by the 1980's had several books published. How could I take what I had learned and transfer it to others so they could fill the gap? In my travels I had met many speakers who had great potential but little training. I sent 50 invitations to these women to come to my home in California and 40 arrived. Included in this group were my two daughters, and Patsy Clairmont, Emilie Barnes and four Hollywood stars, Rhonda Fleming, Bonnie Green, Joanne Dru and Jeanne Cagney. We spent three days and evenings in learning and practice and on the fourth day we went to the garment district of Los Angeles to buy appropriate speaking clothes. I only intended to do this once but Patsy called and asked me to come to Michigan and Bonnie wanted a seminar in Hollywood. So that's how it all started! Later we added Beth Moore, Liz Curtis Higgs, Babbie Mason, Jan Silvious, Becky Tirabasi, Lee Ezell and many others until now almost thirty years later we have trained over 30,000 men and women to become speakers, writers and leaders. My husband Fred and I worked together speaking and writing and eventually Marita took over the ministry of CLASS. In the past two years she has been called to become the Executive Director of CARE (Citizens Alliance for Responsible Energy), a New Mexico not-for profit organization. This is a prestigious position that requires travel and speaking and it makes it impossible for her to carry the responsibilities of both endeavors.
A New Day The Lord has blessed us with Gerry Wakeland, who was formerly the Women's Ministry Director of the Crystal Cathedral. Gerry has filled Marita's spot brilliantly and has many exciting plans for our future. Marita will retain the product sales and Gerry will direct the seminar programs and work with the speakers.Gerry has already blessed me personally and I know her heart and spirit will inspire you also. The world is in turmoil, our country depressed, but Jesus is alive and He is our power. As Paul wrote in Philippians 2:14 - 15:
"Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe."

What We Have to Offer
by Linda Jewell At the depths of the Great Depression, when today's panics would have seemed like a picnic in comparison, the #1 bestseller was Gone with the Wind. Why did people with marginal discretionary income buy a story set against the backdrop of the Civil War? When asked to articulate the book's theme, Margaret Mitchell answered in one word: "Gumption." In the tough times of the 1930's, people identified with characters living in a world gone crazy. Reading Mitchell's book inspired them to overcome their dire everyday circumstances. Looking at today's tough economic times, when people are white-knuckling their money, many authors and speakers may sigh and say to themselves, "Oh, why would any meeting planner hire me?", "Oh, why would anyone buy products I offer on my website or back-of-the-room book table?", or "Oh, why would any editor buy my manuscript?" The answer isn't to write another gumption-themed book. Rather, Frederick Buechner said, "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's hunger meet." I feel strongly that God has placed me at the cross roads where my deep gladness (prayer, parenting, and patriotism) intersects the world's great hunger. Military moms are my ministry. It's not for everyone, but it's where God has posted me and that's where I must give my all. Examining Buechner's observation from all sides, we see three actions to take. First we LOOK UPWARD to make sure we are in the place God calls us. I often employ Florence Littauer's axiom: "When in doubt-don't." If you're doubting whether God called you to write and/or speak, then pray and seek wise, godly counsel. Listen to your spouse. Listen to those in authority over you. Conversely, where there's no doubt-do. Be intrepid, pray, take action, write, speak and report to an accountability partner. Secondly, we LOOK INWARD to identify our God-given gladness, which may be neither convenient nor conventional. If we're unsure, we can pray, journal, and in the waiting do the duty that lies close at hand. Thirdly, we LOOK OUTWARD. We can't feed everyone in the world, but we can feed the ones God sends to us with the food He provides through us. If we're not sure who to serve, we may need to close our mouths and listen to God, then to our families, friends, audiences and readers. Like me, you may need to remove, renovate or rejuvenate some of your presentations, writing projects, and product you currently offer. Or, you may need to step up and step out in faith with new goods and services. In the CLASSEMINAR, we teach that HOPE is Helping Other People Emotionally. We have much hope to offer to a hurting, hungry world. God knows our generation needs it.
Linda Jewell helps military moms face anxious moments with brave hearts. A Blue Star Mother, her blog, Support Our Troops, is for military moms and all others who support our nation's troops.

From Average to Excellent
by Debbie Hannah Skinner"Every time you open your mouth to speak in public, you are a public speaker," says Timothy J. Koegel in his book, The Excellent Presenter. It's often weeks between my formal speaking engagements, but Koegel helped me to see simple, practical things that can be done each day to improve my presentations skills. I bought my copy of The Excellent Presenter in the Chicago airport and finished reading it as my plane landed in Dallas. It's a non-fiction "page turner" I simply could not put down. Using the outline "OPEN UP," the book details ways for speakers to be Organized, Passionate, Engaging, and Natural, then to Understand your audience and Practice. One of my favorite parts of the book is the homework. Forms are included to help set improvement goals, observe presentations by others (I liked the fascinating assignment of observing hand gestures and speech patterns of panelists on television news shows) and practice delivery skills daily. For meeting planners, the brief chapter on effective introductions is well worth the price of the book. Whether you're a professional speaker or a ministry leader, you'll benefit from Koegel's book. Although most of the examples and applications are directed toward the business world, one of Koegel's clients is quoted as saying that, "...in addition to boosting his business, these skills have made him a much better Sunday School teacher." The Excellent Presenter aligns beautifully with the instruction provided by CLASSEMINARS and provides countless tips to help everyone move their presentation skills from average to excellent. The best Christian communicators are always looking for ways to improve. If you'd like to add a book to your professional library that will help you "fine tune" your presentation practices in 2009, I highly recommend The Excellent Presenter. Debbie Hannah Skinner is simply a Bible teacher with a paintbrush. The Lord has creatively woven her passion for teaching Bible and art into Mirror Ministries, through which she paints as she speaks.

Setting Goals for Your Writing - A Roadmap to Success
by Linda Gilden When I was a little girl, my father decided that part of our growing-up educational experience should be a road trip across the United States. So one summer we packed the station wagon, loaded the suitcases on top, and climbed in. Before Daddy started the engine, however, he turned around to face us in the back seat. "I have a road map for each of you so you can see where we are going. Here is a highlighter and you can mark off each leg of the trip so you can see how close we are to our destination. This is going to be a great family time!" It looked awfully far from South Carolina to California, but as the trip progressed, we found that marking off the trip one interstate at a time made the end result seem attainable. Setting goals for your writing career is somewhat like taking a trip. First, you must decide where you are going. Then you have to decide how to get there. Third, you have to follow the path you have chosen. Setting goals gives direction for your writing, a target to aim for, and self-imposed deadlines. In a busy world where circumstances often seem so far out of control, goals give purpose and help create a time table for your work. Writers often work at home, alone, with limited accountability. Putting a plan down on paper for your writing hours is no different than grabbing a roadmap when you go out the door on vacation. Your destination is already in place and that destination is most efficiently reached if you know the shortest route. When setting goals, there are several things to keep in mind. 1. Write down your goals in manageable segments.2. Writing. Writing doesn't just involve computer time. Research, interviews, and laying a good foundation for the writing process are equally important. Prioritize them according to deadline date, amount of research required, or personal preference. This is your roadmap for success. - Submitting. Set a realistic goal and follow through. If you write full-time, perhaps several submissions a week is realistic for you. If you work, maybe one or two submissions a month is more realistic.
- Marketing. Study the markets. Search for new markets for your writing and the internet for guidelines.
- Business. This includes correspondence, making sure you have stamps, envelopes, and office supplies.
- Education. Writers must constantly be learning. Set aside time for writer's conferences, networking, critique groups. reading at least one writing book a month. Take a course at a community college.
3. Be specific with your goals. Instead of "Write one book this year," list "Send proposal on book Ten Ways to Survive the Current Economic Crisis to Publisher X, Publisher Y, and Publisher Z within the next three months. Knowing exactly what your goals are helps eliminate mental wandering and keeps you from exerting time and energy in the wrong direction. 4. Set your goal high, but not too high. Goals must be attainable. Give yourself the opportunity for success by planning realistically. 5. Post your list where you can see it. Being reminded of where you are going will help keep you on track. And knowing you have a custom plan gives you the freedom to dream. 6. Keep your goals to yourself. No one else should see it unless you want them to. Review your list frequently. Nothing (except maybe opening the check when it arrives in the mail!) gives more satisfaction than putting a big checkmark beside a completed project on your list. When you achieve a goal, take time to celebrate. Fix a special dinner, play a game with the children, watch a movie you have wanted to see, read a good book (non-writing related!), or go to lunch with a friend. Your self-confidence will be boosted and you will be motivated to move on to your next goal. After the celebration, review your list. Do things need to be rearranged? Did you learn something in pursuit of this goal that affects one of the others? Did you achieve your goal too easily? Did you discover an area of writing in which you need to hone your skills? Your goals will change. They are not etched in stone. As you develop as a writer, new opportunities will arise for your list and may preempt another item. Allow yourself flexibility to revise your goals. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself if you fail to reach a goal. Failure is not an end. Failure can be a great teacher. Figure out where you missed the mark, reevaluate the project, and get back to work! Denis Watley, author of Seeds of Greatness: The Ten Best-Kept Secrets of Total Success and The Psychology of Winning, says, "Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them."
Do you know where you are going? Do you have a "roadmap" for your writing? Just grab a pencil and paper and put on your "dreaming cap." Oh, yes, and don't forget the highlighter to check your progress! Linda Gilden is the author of Mommy Pick-Me-Ups and the popular Love Notes series.

Evelyn Davison:
"Meeting Florence and joining the first CLASS in 1981, when I was fifty years old and recovering from a double mastectomy, I felt I was let out of prison. I realized that even with disabilities and little hope, I could learn and lead. Throughout these years Florence's example of being a love servant has impacted thousands just like me. Her patience, perseverance, powerful personality and prayers have set a high standard. She and CLASS instill passion and vision through which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. All for giving the Lord a return on His investment - it's called love and it will live forever!"

Linda Jewel:
"For the last ten years I've been excited to see what CLASS does in people's lives, how they change and grow, how they become more confident and competent in communicating their God-given messages. In the last two and a half years, I've been excited in anticipation about what God is doing with CLASSEMINARS, Inc. as an organization and the faculty as a team to step up and step out into the future."
*********** Karen Porter: "CLASS stands at the open door of a new era to train Christian speakers and authors to communicate God's word in the 21st century. With a legacy of twenty years of excellence, CLASSEMINARS, Inc. is poised under the leadership of Gerry Wakeland to meet the challenges of modern culture and modern technology. No leader, author, or speaker who wants to be far above average should miss the new and enhanced programs of CLASS."*********** John Thurman: "Vision without an action plan is a daydream. An action plan without vision is an energy stealer. When a vision and an action plan come together, God moves in powerful ways. I am charged up about the vision, action plan, and direction CLASS is headed. Our mission is to help ministry leaders excel in developing and sharing the message God has placed in their hearts. The coming year will be one of growth, redirection and blessing as we seek to honor Him in all that we do. Be praying for Gerry and the team as we boldly move forward in the weeks and months that lie ahead."
***********
Julie Ferwerda: "One of my favorite quotes from the movies comes out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding; 'Don't let your past determine who you are, but let it be part of who you become.' As we move to new horizons with CLASSEMINARS, Inc. I'm thrilled to know that the best of where we've been will continue to season all the the amazing plans God has in store for our future. This organization has changed many lives, including mine, and I believe there is so much more ahead. With all of the technology advances, communicators have more opportunities to reach across international borders than ever before. Through the CLASSeminar, I believe lives and eternities will be impacted as believers are trained and empowered to communicate the heart of God to His children worldwide."*********** Tama Westman: "The work Fred and Florence Littauer began over twenty years ago is alive and well, a living legacy to the thousands of Christian communicators who became leaders, speakers and authors of excellence, effectively communicating God's truth to a hurting world. And now, as we prepare to launch into yet a new era with CLASSEMINARS, Inc. I feel much like the disciple who heard Jesus say, 'Launch out into the deep.' We are ready to risk our comfort zones to launch into the deep, are you? Have you taken stock of what you want to do, and what God wants you to do? Ephesians 5:16-17 says to "Make every minute count...find out what the Lord wants you to do." I am excited to see what God has planned for CLASS, and what He will do through each of us this year and in the years to come."
