Is Occupational Therapy For My Child?

April Is National Occupational Therapy Month

If you think Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses strictly on helping people with skills they need to work, there's a lot more to know.  OT professionals help children and adults through the therapeutic use of everyday activities with everything they want, and need, to do in life, from helping those with Sensory Integration issues to learning to building strength to adapt to the activities of daily living.

April is OT Month, so this is a great time to learn more about it, and the role it plays for JCFS and our community.

OT encompasses a holistic, customized approach to evaluations, interventions and outcomes for people of all ages in a wide range of circumstances.

For example, OT can:

  • Help a child with disabilities participate in school and social situations;
  • Assist someone recovering from injuries to regain skills;
  • Aid an older adult to stay as independent as possible

IPI's Erin James to run Chicago Marathon for IPI.

Erin James

Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Erin James ran her first marathon last year with her dad. She's running her training races-half marathons-with him this year, but he'll be cheering for her on from the sidelines on October 7th.  Erin, a Developmental Therapist with Integrated Pediatric Interventions (IPI),  spends most of her time running. When she's not running, Erin cheers for her alma mater Notre Dame, practices yoga, and explores Chicago's restaurant scene.

Erin is fundraising for IPI because IPI makes a difference in the lives of clients and their families. Many of her client's parents have said "you helped me see the child beyond the developmental delay." As a Developmental Therapist, Erin works with children ages 0-9 who have a diagnosis of autism or another developmental delay in individual and group therapy on speech, language, and fine motor skills.

Ask Your Clinician about Free Tickets to Kohl Children's Museum "Everyone at Play"

IPI is proud to partner with the Kohl Children's Museum in providing tickets to their "Everyone at Play" events.These are four mornings during the winter when the museum is only open to families with children with special needs. There is less in attendance on these days to decrease the amount of waiting or overstimulation and a quiet room is available for breaks. Ask your IPI therapist for more information or to obtain free tickets. There is one date left in May and we'd love to provide these tickets for you, just ask your therapist.
