Greetings!                             Sept. 5, 2012

Make connections on the "links" and at other upcoming Chamber activities

A single new connection that results in new business is a "hole-in-one" for many Chamber businesses who have found business-building opportunities in the Chamber's frequent and varied networking events. Next Monday, Chamber golfers and their guests will have the chance to attempt a real hole-in-one and many other winning opportunities at our annual Golf Outing. If you would like to play in the outing, please call the Chamber by 9 a.m. tomorrow (888-3040).

If you don't golf, you'll find many other opportunities for new connections awaiting in the coming weeks, including a Business After Hours on Sept. 13 at Champps and activities for Young Professionals, the Women's Business Network, our Small Office/Home Office Group, our Impact Tips Group, and the community. (Yes, it's almost time for Market Day. Do you know a craftsperson, community group or food vendor who should be involved?)

Check out the opportunities below and call us at 888-3040 to let us know how we can help you make great connections this month.

Market Day 2012 is on the horizon
Market Day on horizon

Worthington's downtown streets will bustle with activity on Sept. 29 as the Chamber presents Old Worthington Market Day - Worthington's largest day-long festival - from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event takes place, rain or shine, on the streets of Downtown Worthington - primarily along High Street (SR 23), from SR 161 south to South Street, and on the Village Green.

Market Day features a colorful display of artisan-crafted goods from jewelry, pottery and ceramics to beautiful paintings, decorative clothing and unique wood products. More than 200 exhibitors are expected to display their wares this year. Numerous community and school groups also participate, selling food items or handcrafted goods.

Other attractions on Market Day include the Friends of the Library book sale at Old Worthington Library, Worthington Historical Society's flea market, farmers' market vendors, children's activities and performing groups.

Free shuttle buses are provided to the festival area from the parking lots at Thomas Worthington High School. There is no charge to attend.

For more information, check the Calendar of Events at www.worthingtonchamber.org. Click on Sept. 29, 20112, to view event and vendor registration details.

Note: Want to reach more than 20,000 visitors? Opportunities are still available for Market Day, but deadlines are approaching rapidly. Call the Chamber office today if your business is interested in a sponsor booth and related advertising and promotional opportunities. Vendor applications are still being accepted for arts and crafts booths, community groups and food vendors. ThisWeek Community Newspapers also has Market Day advertising supplement opportunities available. Call 888-3040 for more information all of these opportunities.

Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know is topic of 4th Quarter Get Smart Book Discussion Group
The Get Smart! Book Discussion Group, a partner program offered through the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce and Worthington Libraries, has chosen the title for its fourth quarter 2011
2session. The selection is "Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know" by Jill Geisler

(Review from Publisher's Weekly, shared by Worthington Libraries) Geisler, head of the Poynter Institute's leadership and management faculty and the voice of the popular podcast What Great Bosses Know, has distilled years of management experience and study into this practical step-by-step guide to improving leadership skills.

Covering topics including types of power, how to give and receive constructive feedback, coaching versus fixing, self-awareness and self- management, Geisler provides useful quizzes and assessments to help the reader translate the concepts into personal learning. Rather than a prescriptive, academic book on leadership, Geisler humanizes the text with anecdotes from her own leadership development as a broadcast news director in Milwaukee, sharing her revelations, corrections, and progress.

In addition, she offers insightful observations about leadership, such as how each strength may be accompanied by an "Evil Twin" of perception, for example, high standards may be perceived as being impossible to satisfy and integrity perceived as a "holier-than-thou" attitude. This positive, useful work is sure to be a go-to manual for those new to management.

To register for the event, click on this link or call the Chamber office at 888-3040.

If you'd like to reserve a library copy of the book through Worthington Libraries' website, you can do that here by clicking on the "Reserve" button under the cover image and entering your library account information at the following link:

The discussion group will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the office of Ann Baldwin, 6161 Busch Blvd., Suite 300.

Refreshments will be served. New members and guests are welcome. RSVPs are encouraged to plan for space and refreshment needs.
