DNSChanger is a virus that redirects internet users to fraudulent DNS servers, usually sending users to fake web sites or advertisements for fake products. In November 2011, the FBI arrested the malware creators and seized their infrastructure. Given the number of infected computers, the FBI chose to sanitize & keep the servers running as a bridge back to "real" DNS servers. About 227,000 PCs and Macs worldwide continued to access these servers, indicating that the DNSChanger malware had not been removed from those user machines yet. The FBI's redirect servers will be shut down on Monday July 9th, 2012. If your PC or Mac is still infected, it will lose Internet access -- unless you remove the virus from your machine. The likelihood of this impacting SynerTel's Managed WorkPlace IT clients is very low - but home PCs, and those for readers whose IT we do not manage may be at risk.
