Denial of Service attacks against targeted financial, government, and other websites may take them down - as well as potentially paralyzing the internet.
DOS attacks are typically mounted using compromised PCs which have been previously infected - these could be YOUR PCs, zombie-harnessed to take part in the attack. A new distributed denial of service attack tool (called RefRef) is rumored to be either released or on the edge of release.
Other attacks could cause the release of sensitive information, or the compromise of cloud-based platforms that your business relies upon (banking, email, CRM, etc.).
WHAT YOU CAN DO
1. Be alert for unusual network activity - firewalls, email servers, network routers, etc.
2. If you have delayed patching servers or workstations, or updating anti-virus/anti-malware protection software or hardware - now is the time to ensure its updating. Sometimes AV client software will lose sync with its "mothership" without alerting you or the user. Forcing AV updates in such a case may be helpful.
3. If you experience effects which you reasonably believe are related to the above-described activity, you may contact us (SynerTel) for assistance; we will bring law enforcement into the picture if warranted.
4. If you have any questions, or would like our assistance applying Microsoft or other vendor security updates, our support team is available at 415 746-1800, or via email: support@synertel.com
