| How I spent my summer vacation ... |
My family was privileged to attend Cazadero Performing Arts camp for a week this summer. It was a double treat of being completely immersed in making music, art, and theater with family and friendly folks while being completely unplugged (no cell, no internet) from the outside world.
We did improv theater, played classical, jazz, Irish, steel drums, performed for and accompanied each other, learned clowning, sang in gospel choir ... and (see above), I played in the circus band - the pit orchestra for the amazing juggling and clowning performance class. (That's "Hal", the Hat-of-Alligator on my noggin. He's quite a fan of the arts.)
I hope each of you had a chance to unplug, cut loose, and recharge this summer as well!

| No Time? No carrier cables anywhere near your building? No Problem! |
Urban Strategies had a big problem. They had a community development center to open in SF's Hunter's Point in July. At the end of July, the City of San Francisco made available an abandoned recreation center for the CDC. Already weeks delayed, and knowing SynerTel supported hundreds of non-profit organizations in California, Urban Strategies selected us to rapidly implement a computer network and a Toshiba CIX phone system.
Time was paramount - the schedule was already weeks behind. Urban Strategies asked ATT for a next-day, expedited installation of their voice, fax, and internet service - and ATT agreed. But at the end of the day, there were several ATT trucks parked in the street - but no service. Toxic soil removal had taken away not only the toxics - but also all the underground cables in the tract. It was going to take weeks, even months, for ATT to replace them.
Urban Strategies VP Susan Glassman asked SynerTel for ideas. We explained the idea of delivering telephony services over IP, and suggested that we could do this with our wireless partner Unwired Ltd. A site survey confirmed that we could place a small, unobtrusive antenna on the roof of the new CDC and receive 14Mb wireless internet service from downtown SF. We then fast-tracked a SIP trunking partner, Broadvox, to provision the IP version of 'regular business phone lines' for Urban Strategies.
By simply adding IP capabilities to the Toshiba phone system Urban Strategies had already purchased from SynerTel, Urban Stratagies was fully operational in less than a week with phone, fax, and speedy internet service -- before ATT had even drawn up plans for how the underground re-wiring of the area could be done.
If you face a difficult or intractable technology problem - even if others tell you it can't be done -- give us a try! With over 180 years of senior staff experience, we pride ourselves on thinking creatively to develop client-specific solutions!

Security Risks of the Summer - in Brief FarmVille, City Bank iApp and more |
July 2010 - A study released by Cisco spotlighted FarmVille as a prime example of new routes for malware to reach and infect your network - and of wasted work time and bandwidth.
Cisco found that 7% of a global sample of users accessing Facebook spend an average of 68 minutes per day playing the interactive game "FarmVille." "Mafia Wars" was the second most popular game, with 5% of users each racking up 52 minutes of play daily. That was followed by "Café World," which is played by 4% of users chewing up 36 minutes of wasted time per day.
In addition, Cisco's most recent research found that cybercriminals are exploiting the gap between how quickly they can access a vulnerability and the time it takes enterprises to deploy technologies to protect their networks.
Citi Bank warned in late July that its iPhone e-banking app had a serious flaw, saving account information in hidden files on the user's iPhone. This information was then susceptable to physical or electronic theft. Users should upgrade to the latest version of the app immediately!
