Tough Break - No Brakes! |
May 2010 - University researchers at UC San Diego and the University of Washington have taken a close look at the computer systems used to run today's cars and discovered new ways to hack into them, sometimes with frightening results.
By simply connecting to the standard diagnostic computer port included in all late-model cars, researchers were able to do some nasty things, such as turning off the brakes, changing the speedometer reading, blasting hot air or music on the radio, and even locking passengers in the car.
The researcher's goal was to raise auto industry and regulatory awareness about the need to better secure on-board automotive systems. (At least the Edsel never had this problem).
While we don't have a solution for this (yet!), its wise to understand the degree to which we rely on software in almost every area of our lives - cars, elevators, smart phones.
You can count on SynerTel to provide reliable computer security solutions - and to keep a thoughtful eye on ways to better secure other software-based pieces of your world! |
