Time for Spring Cleaning in the server or telecom room?

09 CCP logoThat tiny room housing your servers, routers, and/or phone systemcould interrupt your business if you don't check it out periodically. Since spring is here, it's a perfect time to clean it up!

All too often, equipment areas are forgotten after a system implementation.  They collect boxes, dust, mops, brooms - even boxes of archival records. Dust builds up - followed by heat -- and a disaster can ensue quickly.

It's a good idea to measure or calculate the total heat generated. Often equipment is added to server rooms over time - but the cooling capacity serving the room remains at its original capacity. This can lead to meltdowns.

As buildings implement energy management systems, critical cooling to equipment rooms is often turned off evenings and weekends. Temperatures can quickly rise to danger levels - especially on 3 day holiday weekends. SynerTel can help by implementing environmental monitoring - watching temperature and humidity for you 24 x 7 -and alerting you or building management in case of a cooling breakdown that could lead to equipment failure or data loss.  We can even shut down your systems remotely if needed!

Ensure the server room is not crammed with office supplies, files, boxes, old dead computers, or unused furniture.  Access to equipment is critical if there's a failure.  We recently visited an equipment room which took 20 minutes to unload before we could get near the equipment requiring service. That's a long time to wait if your company is down!

Check for dust buildup, since it can be drawn into your equipment through cooling fans. Dust could disrupt proper cooling and airflow, causing equipment to run hotter and malfunction. These buildups can restrict airflow and the critical transfer of heat away from chips that keeps them working. SynerTel routinely dis-assembles servers to do a full cleaning with clean compressed air - removing dust that's built up inside. We'll do it as part of your spring cleaning if needed!

Once the room is clean - check that all equipment is labeled with its purpose, name, IP address, and contact information for the responsible vendor. Its common for a single server room to be supported by multiple vendors (data carrier, voice carrier, IT resource or managed services provider, access control system vendor, etc.)  Labeling ensures that a downed component can be easily found, diagnosed, and repaired as quickly as possible -- and that if a vendor has an accident with equipment supported by someone else, the right support resource can be quickly contacted for help.

Finally, check cabling to ensure it cannot be accidentally disconnected from equipment when work has to be done in the room.  A loose power or signal cord can take you off the air just as effectively as a failed system.
