The Bold New World of Malware - what you need to know this month

Hacker at workIf you're like most people who make a living in front of a PC but don't "do IT" as your vocation, you're probably not familiar with the new buzzwords  like "Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Poisoning," "Website Hijacking," "Fake AV," and "XSS Vulnerabilities."

But unless you're an exception, you've probably experienced something like this:

You access a website (probably one you trust and have used many times before). Perhaps it's an online news site  about the tragic earthquake in Haiti, or perhaps something less noble like the latest news about Tiger Woods and his wife. Or you clicked on a link you came across on a trusted friend's page in Twitter or Facebook.

When you go to the web page to view the article, a very professionally-formatted window suddenly pops up telling you your PC is infected with several different viruses. It instructs you to "click here" to scan and clean your system.

Even if you click the "X" in the upper-right corner to close the window (because you suspect it isn't what it appears to be), the next thing you see is a second window executing a scan of your system. It completes the scan amazingly quickly, then tells you it has successfully cleaned all the bad stuff off your system.

Finally it tells you to "click here" to get the full version of this exciting new protection software that finds and cleans stuff your rusty old antivirus app can't find -- and it does it faster than anything you've ever seen before. If you click to purchase this wondrous program, it then asks you for your credit card info (of course).

March Security Alert - Did you stay at a Ramada, Days Inn, Super8, Howard Johnson and Travelodge in the past 12 months?

Wyndham
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (operators of the above brands) suffered THREE separate loss of customer data incidents in the last 12 months. All involved loss of credit card data from hotel guests.  If you stayed at any of these properties in the last 12 months, it would be prudent to check with Wyndham to learn if your data was among those lost. If so - cancel your credit card immediately and get a new one issued.

Some industry experts are suggesting that until Wyndham can secure its borders, it might be wise to consider staying at other hotels. Three separate breaches in 12 months is considered high.

Are you concerned about protecting your company's data and sensitive customer information? Let SynerTel design and manage an affordable, multi-layer security mesh that surrounds your physical and virtual networks.  Ask us for a free consultation!
