Mission Statement
The Partnership's mission is to help students in high-need schools improve their academic achievement by partnering with educators, parents and the community.
L.A. Education Partnership
In January, Los Angeles Education Partnership hosted an evening of conversation on "Is LAUSD in the Race to the Top?" with five experienced and knowledgeable panelists whose responses to Race to the Top funds ranged from "a drop in the bucket" to a chance for dialogue about collaborative ways to improve academic achievement. Panelists included Dr. Glen Thomas, then California Secretary of Education; Sharon Robinson, Special Assistant to the Superintendent of LAUSD; Julie Washington, UTLA Elementary Vice President; Elliot Washor, co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning; and Genethia Hudley-Hayes, former member and president of the LAUSD Board of Education. An archived video of the evening will be available soon.

LAUSD Public School Choice

LAUSD's Public School Choice process will allow the new Esteban E. Torres high school campus in East Los Angeles, built for five small schools, to be operated by five teacher-developed pilot schools. Support for the design teams was provided by the Humanitas initiative at Los Angeles Education Partnership.
Target Science Teachers
LA River field investigation
Sixteen teachers from XX LAUSD schools in the Target Science K-12 teacher network joined Dr. Cathy Jacobs, lecturer in Biology and Interdisciplinary Studies at CSU Dominguez Hills, for a Saturday Field Investigation of the native chaparral of Los Angeles. They learned about ecological succession, indicator species, adaptations, fire ecology and how to collect and analyze field data, all of which they can take back to their classrooms to benefit their students.

Science teachers at the LA River

The prior Field Investigation at the L.A. Zoo in December was a huge success, drawing 35 science teachers. On April 24, a cadre of science teachers will return to sites along the LA River to join our newly formed 'Research Corps' for the Target Science network. The data they collect will be part of an ongoing investigation of water quality in the LA River.

Forty Humanitas students in the 10th grade Humanitas/Health and Medical Partnerships at Carson High School participated in the Global Classrooms Los Angeles Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in March at UCLA. MUN is a LAUSD opportunity supported by L.A. Education Partnership, which engaged 428 students from 18 schools, and their 38 teachers. The same week, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was the featured speaker at the Global Creative Forum at Hammer Museum and met with 15 Global Classrooms students, including four from Carson.  "It was amazing when you consider the trust he has for teens," said Danilo A., a 10th grader from Carson HS Humanitas. Carson Humanitas teachers, Terri Ann Sullivan, Jessica Ravelo and Saili Tuitasi were impressed to see that an alumnus from the Carson Humanitas program, who currently attends UCLA, was a chairperson for the MUN Middle School division this year.
Career Academies
Alumni from Career Academies who share their stories have given us a glimpse into the power of this career-themed educational program. Alma Guerrero, a freshman at Lewis & Clark, is an alumna of the Academy of Finance at Manual Arts High School. She shared this story with us:A. Guerrero

"When I started my first semester at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon, I was granted work-study, and was called for a job interview. Career Academies had me ready from the start. I dressed professionally, had five copies of my full resume, and had the best interview I have had so far. The next day, I was hired as the student assistant for the Office of Multicultural Affairs. I was asked if a senior on campus helped me with my resume. Of course they didn't! I explained what the Academy of Finance was all about and how Career Academies prepared me. They were really impressed. I am so proud of myself and of this program because it has gotten me so far."

LAEP's new Early Head Start program will serve 100 children 0-3 and 10 pregnant mothers in the 90001 South Los Angeles zip code. Early Head Start will build upon the work currently being done in the area by LAEP's School Readiness Initiative funded by First 5, serving children 0-5 through home visitation, socialization activities, and parent workshops. The office is pleased to prepare for dozens of new employees. We are excited about the opportunity these two programs give us to educate and empower more families and children 0-5.

At a recent early childhood health and readiness fair at Parmelee Avenue Elementary School in April, 850 parents and children attended, making this first joint effort between our Early Head Start and School Readiness Initiatives a wonderful success.
Community Schools
Student with Joe BidenThis April, a team from San Fernando and Sylmar High Schools traveled to Philadelphia to attend a Community Schools conference hosted by the National Coalition for Community Schools. The team included students, partner providers, and school administrators. The Valley Neighborhood Collaborative, a consortium of Community Schools in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, presented a workshop on strategies for creative collaboration on a large campus, which also included students as presenters. These students had the chance to get a picture with Vice President Joe Biden.

During the spring semester, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges visited San Fernando High School and the Pacoima Charter Elementary School to renew both schools' accreditation. While there, the committee had the opportunity to hear first hand from students and community service providers at both schools about how their community schools work.
