Lights. Camera. Job Shadow!
Students in the Academy of Finance at Manual Arts High School had the privilege of experiencing an engaging and unusual job shadow when they toured the Los Angeles Comcast Entertainment facilities in June. The opportunity to see employees in a workplace that is exciting and relevant can be enough to inspire students to plan for careers and motivate them to do well in high school.
Academy students behind the camera Johanna Galindo, Facilities Assistant, and Sherman Dorsey, Facilities Director, led ten deserving sophomores on an exciting and hands-on workplace tour. Students visited Ryan Seacrest's studio where he records his popular morning show on KIIS FM. Next, they entered the G4 recording studio, equipped with full-size robots used to film shows devoted to video games. The most exciting part of the tour took place in the E! Style recording studio, where students took control of the cameras and practiced filming each other. Some enjoyed the feel of working backstage while others coveted the camera's spotlight and practiced reading off the teleprompter.

Academy of Finance students from Manual Arts HS tour Comcast
Academy students learned that some of the directors and managers working at Comcast started off as assistants or working in the mailroom, and that the role of perseverance and hard work were key. They also appreciated that networking skills were essential for these employees. After leaving the Comcast facilities, these Academy sophomores expressed excitement about job opportunities available in the entertainment industry. Impressed by how well behaved and engaged these students were, Ms. Galindo plans to invite other Academy students for a visit to Comcast soon. |
| If you know of an opportunity to offer a job shadow for Academy students, please help us provide this kind of educational experience. It inspires students to stay in school.
Sincerely, Mark Karaptian & Marilyn Alvarez Program Director Program Coordinator
