Dear ,
Job shadow opportunities give Career Academy students hands-on, life experience - a powerful tool that links their education to life beyond high school and can motivate them to excel. Let me tell you a story about a recent job shadow event at Arnold & Porter LLP.

Academy Students
Tour Arnold & Porter LLP

Internship providers recognized
About two weeks ago, seventeen high school juniors from Urban Education Partnership's Career Academies program gave up their Saturday because they wanted to participate in a job shadow event held at the law offices of Arnold & Porter LLP downtown.  Lisa Baker, chair of the Southern California Association of Law Libraries (SCALL) welcomed the students and gave an overview of SCALL's Inner City Youth Internship Program.  Baker explained that the students who were present would have the opportunity to interview for internships in law-related venues.  Paul Moorman from the USC Law Library and Maria Garcia from Jones Day took the students down to Arnold & Porter's law library and spoke with the students about "a day in the life" of a law librarian.  Students were also able to tour the offices and enjoyed the pop art, much of it by Robert Dowd, on display.

At conference table
A variety of employees contributed their time to the job shadow and spoke to the students.  Walter Peņa, an attorney from Jones Day, shared with the students the importance of networking.  Pauline Aranas, Associate Dean and professor at USC, stressed the importance of education.  Rosa Vaquera-Martinez, a former Career Academy intern who continues to work at Loeb & Loeb, talked about how her performance during her summer internship helped her land a full-time job at Loeb & Loeb and influenced her pursuit of law as a career.  As the students enjoyed pizza, Jack Quinn, retired managing partner of the Los Angeles office at Arnold & Porter LLP, spoke to them about growing up in Los Angeles and how he started his career in law.

In addition to what students learned by participating in this job shadow, being on the 44th floor of the building created a dramatic impression. For all of them it was their first experience being in a law office like Arnold & Porter, and that experience fueled excitement about obtaining a paid internship with a law firm, and about what might be possible after high school.

I encourage those of you who might be able to host a job shadow event or a summer internship for Career Academy students to contact Marilyn Alvarez or myself.  Exposure to the real world makes a real difference for young men and women as they connect their academic efforts to the possibilities those efforts create throughout their lives.

Sincerely,
