As always, I'm sending you our e-newsletter with much gratitude for your generous support, which helps the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) provide charitable care to the neediest and most vulnerable people in our community. I hope the articles in this e-newsletter will be helpful to you and to those for whom you care. I also want to share with you the following excerpt from a story featured in the New York Daily News on October 20. It showcases the difference VNSNY is able to make in people's lives, and in this case, the life of Minnie Smith in Harlem:
"Teaching is the focus," says Scott-Campbell. "You want to make the patients independent. This is what prevents hospitalization or a call to 911."
This aspect of home care is an essential part of extending senior life. Many homebound seniors, before care, are depressed, lonely and sometimes even bedridden. A home nurse provides not only convenient care, she offers companionship.
Scott-Campbell couldn't be prouder of what she does, and what she loves most is seeing the progress patients make under her care.

This article showcases just one of many of VNSNY's dedicated and caring home care nurses, rehabilitation therapists, social workers, home health aides, home attendants and other clinical professionals. As Juliet Scott-Campbell describes in this article, VNSNY nurses and staff do much more than take their patients' blood pressure or provide medication to them-they take into account every aspect of their patients' lives to get a comprehensive picture and determine the best way to prevent hospitalizations and improve their lives.
The specialized, high-quality health care services VNSNY staff provides, profoundly affects the lives of our patients. If you are interested in making an additional contribution to help people like Minnie during these challenging economic times, please call 212-609-1525, or feel free to email me directly at Stacey.Weston@vnsny.org.
Thanks to your help, VNSNY is here when you need us.

Free Webinars for Caregivers

The fall-before the rush of the holidays-can be a good time of the year for planning ahead, and for spending quality time with those we care about. We have seen family members responsible for caring for their parents, or other family members, benefit greatly from participating in informational workshops and seminars for caregivers. VNSNY's affiliate, Partners in Care, is offering two upcoming free online seminars in its series, "Navigating Elder Care":
- November 3: Ensuring that those you care about has appropriate in-home care
- November 16: Understanding and navigating the financial realities of home care
These live webinars will be hosted by Emmy-award-winning TV journalist and health educator, Mary Alice Williams, whose personal experience with home care matters brings a unique perspective to the conversation. Panelists will include case managers, RNs, clinical managers and elder law attorneys, to name just a few. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, making these personally relevant and interactive sessions. To register, click here.

Enhance Memory with Fall Foods
Studies have shown that diet can play a key role in memory. A lack of vitamin B12, for instance, is associated with memory loss and dementia, and diets high in vegetables have been shown to reduce or even reverse age-related memory loss. Many brain-boosting fruits and vegetables are at their peak in the fall, and it's a perfect time to take advantage of their memory-enhancing properties.
