Where Are the Men?

If you have boys, you know that they are wired quite differently from young ladies. Both genders have unique challenges, but our boys face struggles that are particular to their gender, issues rooted in widespread pornography, educational systems, and even environmental issues.

Does your son seem to have trouble with chronic laziness, or video games? Does he say school is "stupid" and seem unmotivated? Do you have a plan for him that will guide him into manhood somehow, or is that something you expect to just "happen naturally"?

Becoming a man doesn't happen naturally, unfortunately. And many of our guys feel as though they're being squashed into a mold meant for women, with good reason.

I read a book this week recommended by a friend called Boys Adrift by Leonard Sax. I feel it is one of the most comprehensive books I've read on the issues of why so many boys are not progressing into manhood. Please consider picking it up if you are raising boys!

On that same subject, the book PurityWorks provides for 8-12 year-olds is The Squire and the Scroll, which teaches honor, integrity, and service as well as purity of heart. The interactive Life Lessons, based on the storybook, includes a series of 21 short studies, activities and creative opportunities that teach boys what it means to become a man of honor.

The Life Lessons also includes a ceremony included that can function as a rite of passage. We are sorely lacking these in American culture, but so many other cultures find them absolutely vital. No wonder our children seem to have such a lack of direction.

Consider your plan for your son(s) today. Does he have opportunities in and outside the house to see and pursue what a good man is and what he does? How will he become a man, and not just a "nice boy"? How will he live in the real world as a man of nobility and honor, not just experiencing those thrills through video game roles?

Begin these discussions today with your spouse or other parents. Boys need our help. Start by educating yourself on the options with the resources above, or by visiting the resource list on our web site. It isn't just about the girls, y'know - boys are meant to take leadership in professing purity and honor, and making it work!

As mentioned above, The Squire and the Scroll and its companion Life Lessons offer a unique and precious opportunity to train boys in personal integrity and purity. The Life Lessons are loaded with ideas and can be used according to schedule and needs. Parent helps make it easy to know how to share with a child at their unique development level, too. Parents may read the storybook to sons (and daughters!) even before the age of 8, and then introduce the Life Lessons to boys throughout the 8-12 years.

All books are available on the PurityWorks web site. Visit our store to purchase the purity resources you may need today. Your purchases help support the message and mission of PurityWorks every day.

About Jennie Bishop
and PurityWorks
Jennie
Purity is a topic often associated with teen abstinence, but Jennie Bishop makes it her business to spread a message that personal integrity is about more than sex, and relevant at all ages.

"Issues of purity affects us from the cradle to the grave, in our hearts as well as our bodies," she says.

Bishop's best selling children's picture book, The Princess and the Kiss, has received wide acclaim from organizations such as Dennis Rainey's Family Life for its simple, straightforward message of saving a "kiss" for a future spouse. The companion book for boys, The Squire and the Scroll, approaches purity for boys from the angle of an adventurous quest, dragon included. Both medieval tales also have Life Lessons devotionals available that help parents and children go deeper, even offering purity ceremony ideas.

The overwhelming response to these books made Bishop aware of the need for a practical, strategic approach to purity training for all ages. Her methodology, Planned PurityŽ, is now presented in PurityWorks seminars in the U.S. and around the world.

"Purity is a worldwide issue that crosses every boundary," says Bishop. "It touches every area of life. I believe that when the root issue of purity is addressed and individuals learn to value purity worldwide, nations will experience true freedom, greater health, growth and economic success."

Jennie speaks in many venues: pregnancy organizations, schools (public and private), churches (of all denominations) and community gatherings. Her poise and passion make Jennie a frequent guest on radio (Family Life Today, WBCL's Mid-morning Show, and more), and television (The Harvest Show, 100 Huntley Street, and others). As a member of the board for iCare, a division of the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, Jennie lends her voice to the iCare vision, providing parents with strategies by which they can understand modern technology and communication devices to guard their children's purity.

Bishop's non-profit organization, PurityWorks, also mobilizes purity training efforts for children, families, teens and adults in Ukraine orphanages, with partners in Kiev, and in various outreach settings in African countries, including Nigeria and Namibia.
