What's different about the 2010-2011 calendar?
The 2010-2011 calendar removes many "short weeks" (school in session fewer than five days in a week) from our typical calendar. Instead, the 2010-2011 calendar consolidates the days off into two full-week breaks.
These breaks take place in September and February.
Formal student progress reports will go out six times a year instead of four.
School begins one week earlier in August but still ends before Memorial Day.
The 2010-2011 calendar contains the same number of days for student instruction and teacher workdays.

Citizens for Progressive Transit
We would like to invite you to join Citizens for Progressive Transit. Thanks to member contributions, CfPT has been able to positively influence the public conversation about our region's relationship to transportation.
In 2009, we successfully lobbied the Georgia Senate to pass a bill that would keep MARTA running seven days a week despite the recession. We also supported, and the Senate passed, a separate bill that would allow voters to vote on regional transit projects. However, both measures failed in the House of Representatives.
When the legislators went home in April, it looked as though MARTA would have to end seven day a week service. So we joined other pro-transit voices in the media. Elected officials on the Atlanta Regional Commission board heard the call and used federal stimulus dollars to keep MARTA running seven days a week.
Past contributions from members have helped us speak up for the need to keep transit running through this recession and to use new transit projects to create a sustainable economic recovery. But as you know, we have much work to do before Georgia cities have World Class Transit systems. Your support sends a message that Georgians want better public transit. Joining is easy - just click here. We plan to recognize all 2009 contributors on our website so please let us know if you prefer to remain anonymous. Thank you for all that you do. Sincerely,
Lee Biola President

Statement from Speaker Glenn Richardson
"Effective January 1, 2010, I will resign my position as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and as state Representative for the 19th District in Paulding County.
It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Paulding County as their Representative for 14 years and as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives for the last five years. During this time, I have appreciated working with the members of the House and the people of Georgia to keep state government efficient and ensure a low tax burden for our fellow Georgians.
As Speaker, I have been well served by the entire staff of the House of Representatives, especially the staff in the Speaker's Office. To each of them I offer my profound thanks for their tireless efforts. And to my many friends and supporters throughout the state, thank you for standing by me even in the most difficult times. My service would not have been possible without you.
I am confident that House Leadership will continue to lead the House and its members as they serve all Georgians to the best of their abilities.
I recently made public that I have suffered from depression for many years. I continue to seek treatment and have made progress in dealing with this disease. In making this public disclosure, it was my hope to raise awareness and encourage others who suffer from this disease to come forward and seek treatment. I fear that the media attention of this week has deflected this message and done harm to many people who suffer from this condition.
I am thankful for the opportunities my service afforded me to make Georgia 's future brighter. Though I will no longer be serving in elected office, my commitment to see a better tomorrow for our state remains. As always, I am confident that Georgia 's best days are still ahead." |

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) encourages those who are behind on their child support payments to take advantage of the annual Settlement Day event. Settlement Day gives non-custodial parents an opportunity to make a payment on past due balances during the holiday season. The goal of Settlement Day is to ensure that children have financial support especially during the holiday season.
Individuals who are behind on their child support have until December 8, 2009 to make a payment toward their total past due balance in addition to their regular payment. Non-custodial parents who wish to settle their past due balances can do so during the week of December 7 by visiting their local child support office.
Local offices do not accept cash and there is a $1.50 transaction fee for processing each payment. Other payment options include: Mail: Send certified checks or money orders to: OCSS Family Support Registry, P.O. Box 1600, Carrollton, Georgia 30112-1600 . 2010-11 and 2011-12 School Calendars
to be determined by DeKalb School Board
On Monday, December 7th, the DeKalb Board of Education will consider approving proposed calendars for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years (action item J15)
The current 2009-10 calendar provides for a start date of the 2nd Monday in August, ends the first semester one full week before Christmas and ends the second semester on a Friday while providing for an 11 week summer break. The current schedule has 89 school days in the first semester and 91 in the second semester. The proposed 2010-11 and 2011-12 calendars start and end the first semesters on the same schedule but add a holiday in 2010-11 to coincide with election day (November 2nd). The calendar lengthens Winter Break by one day and ends the second semester on a Wednesday. The first semester is 88 days and the second semester is 92 days. Summer break will be reduced to 10 ½ weeks. The 2011-12 calendar is virtually identical except the Election Day holiday becomes an additional February holiday; the calendar provides 89 days in the first semester and 91 days in the second semester. The summer break remains at 10 ½ weeks. Please visit http://www.emory-lavista.org/ for more information and to view the calendars. Click on Announcements. The following concerns, which are not an exhaustive list, have been raised by members of the public: 1. Pushing more instructional days into the second semester under the 2010-11 calendar means fewer instructional days before key tests such as End of Course, CRCT and Graduation. 2. The proposed calendars reduce the length of the summer break. 3. The 2011-12 calendar creates one three day week in February. 4. The calendars lengthen the Winter Break. Please examine the calendars closely and to contact your board members if you have any concerns or questions. |

Selection of DeKalb School Principals On Monday, December 7, the DeKalb School Board will consider amending a Board policy (action item J 5, By-Law BBFA,) to reduce the role of school councils in the selection of school principals.
Currently, pursuant to a regulation issued by the Superintendent, school councils play a significant role in the interview and recommendation process for principals. Parents, teachers and a business representative now hold a majority of 5 out of 7 positions on each Interview Committee, which interviews all candidates selected by Human Resources and recommends two candidates to the Superintendent, who makes the final decision. The recommendations are advisory only.
The proposed Board policy eliminates the Interview Committee. The Superintendent would only be required to ask for very general input from the school council about the traits the new principal should have, but only if the principal is to be hired from outside current DCSS personnel. The school council would have no input if someone is to be reassigned from within DCCS. Please visit http://www.emory-lavista.org/ for more information. |
Dogs up for Adoption in Decatur
Here are two very sweet dogs who've been rescued and are currently living at the vet where I work awaiting adoption.
Diesel, a 2-year-old male, was rescued by good Samaritans who found him left chained-up in the back yard of an abandoned house. Thankfully, Animal Action Rescue stepped up and committed to Diesel's veterinary care and finding him a home. Diesel had a female companion who was also rescued and has been adopted because she is the desirable blue and white variety of pit bull. But Diesel's beauty is more than skin deep he is extremely loving and affectionate despite the hardship he endured in his puppy years. Diesel presses his big block head against his kennel door craving the affection of all the veterinary staff. We think he'll be about 60-65 lbs at his ideal weight.
Hambone, a 1-year-old male, was found wandering the grounds of Decatur High School and brought to the vet in hopes someone would reclaim him.... but no one came for him. Hambone's name suits him perfectly because, unlike Diesel's mild-mannered personality, Hambone is a ham! Instead of pressing his head against the door for attention, Hambone stands up on his hind legs to greet all his visitors. His poorly cropped ears make him look menacing, but he is anything but! Hambone has a taller and leaner build than Diesel but will be about the same weight. Both of these eligible males are neutered, microchipped and current on all vaccines! Anyone interested in meeting Diesel or Hambone can come to The Village Vets of Decatur any time during regular business hours (Mon-Fri 7:30am-6:00pm and Sat 8:00-2:00). Just email me, call me at (404) 371-0111, or come in and ask for me at the front desk www.thevillagevets.com. There is an application, adoption contract and $195 adoption fee to cover a portion of the rescue group's cost of veterinary care. Check out both dogs' bios and/or apply on-line at www.animalactionrescue.org.
Please help Animal Action Rescue of Atlanta win $10,000 by casting your vote for AAR at www.animalactionrescue.org. It takes less than five minutes! |
