Temporary child care assistance program targets families affected by recession

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) has created a new federally funded program called Temporary Child Care Assistance (TCCA) that will be operated under the state's Child Care Program. The program, which ends in September 2010, will provide time-limited assistance with child care costs for families that qualify.

To qualify for TCCA, a person must:
Be a Georgia resident

Be actively involved in either job readiness training, vocational training, technical school or college

Be unemployed or work part-time

Have income that falls within the income guidelines

Care for a child who is 12 years old or younger (or 17 years or younger if they have special needs)

To receive TCCA benefits, families must either apply directly online or call 1-866-371-8222 to receive a paper application by mail.

How Neighborhoods Can Reduce the Risk of Obesity

Key findings:
Neighborhood parks promote exercise, especially among residents who live within a mile of a park.

School playgrounds are an underused resource for weekend exercise.

Having four or more different types of businesses in a neighborhood can increase the number of walking trips among residents.

In neighborhoods where residents are willing to help each other, children are less likely to be overweight.

What's different about the 2010-2011 calendar?

The 2010-2011 calendar removes many "short weeks" (school in session fewer than five days in a week) from our typical calendar. Instead, the 2010-2011 calendar consolidates the days off into two full-week breaks.

These breaks take place in September and February.
Formal student progress reports will go out six times a year instead of four.

School begins one week earlier in August but still ends before Memorial Day.

The 2010-2011 calendar contains the same number of days for student instruction and teacher workdays.

Top 5 Tips for Safe Holiday Toy Shopping

Each year, more than 3 billion toys and games are sold in the United States, with 65 percent of these sales occurring between the day after Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas. Learn how to shop safe this holiday season by following these top 5 tips:

Before shopping for toys, consider the child's age, interest and skill level. A fun, but inappropriate toy for a particular child can be dangerous.

Keep toys with small parts away from children under age 3. They can choke on small toys and toy parts.

Shopping at a second hand shop this holiday season? Check recalls.gov to make sure kids' products and toys are safe and haven't been recalled.

Bikes or scooters make great holiday gifts. But remember that a helmet is a necessity, not an accessory when it comes to wheeled sports.

Consider alternatives to putting children in shopping carts including strollers and carts that have plastic mini-cars or trucks attached to the front or back. If you must use a cart, make sure your child stays seated and is secured by a seat belt.  To learn more click here.

HOLIDAY DEPRESSION AND STRESS

By the Mental Health Alliance of Georgia

The holiday season can be a time full of joy, cheer, parties and family gatherings. But for many people, it is a time of self-evaluation, loneliness, reflection on past failures and anxiety about an uncertain future.

What Causes Holiday Blues?
Many factors can cause the "holiday blues": stress, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, over-commercialization, financial constraints, and the inability to be with one's family and friends. The demands of shopping, parties, family reunions and house guests also contribute to feelings of tension. People may also develop other stress responses such as headaches, excessive drinking, over-eating and difficulty sleeping. Even more people experience post-holiday let down after January 1. This can result from disappointments during the preceding months compounded by the excess fatigue and stress.

Coping with Stress & Depression During the Holidays
Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable. Try to set realistic goals for yourself. Pace yourself. Organize your time. Make a list and prioritize the important activities.

Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Don't put the entire focus on just one day (i.e., Thanksgiving Day). Remember that it's a season of holiday sentiment, and activities can be spread out to lessen stress and increase enjoyment. Remember the holiday season does not banish reasons for feeling sad or lonely; there is room for these feelings to be present, even if the person chooses not to express them.

Leave "yesteryear" in the past and look toward the future. Life brings changes. Each season is different and can be enjoyed in its own way. Don't set yourself up in comparing today with the "good ol' days."
Do something for someone else. Try volunteering some of your time to help others.

Enjoy activities that are free, such as taking a drive to look at holiday decorations, going window shopping or making a snowperson with children.
Be aware that excessive drinking will only increase your feelings of depression.

Try something new. Celebrate the holidays in a new way.

Spend time with supportive and caring people. Reach out and make new friends, or contact someone you haven't heard from in awhile.

Save time for yourself! Recharge your batteries! Let others share in the responsibility of planning activities.

Support LifeLine

We will never make a dent in metro-Atlanta's pet overpopulation crisis without low-cost spay/neuter services like the ones LifeLine provides to anyone who needs them. LifeLine, located in Avondale Estates (Dekalb County), has fixed tens-of-thousands of pets since it opened just a few years ago!

And remember, it's not just about saving lives, it's about saving tax dollars on catching, housing and killing surplus pets. Animal Control is not free! So this is an issue that effects everyone, even those who don't care about the number of animals being killed in our shelters and suffering stray on our streets and in our neighborhoods.

Please help save LifeLine by making whatever donation you can afford and passing this message to others who may be able to contribute as well.

Read about LifeLine here: www.atlantapets.org.   They are truly amazing!
