Federal funds bail out MARTA
ARC gives $25 million in stimulus cash for preventive maintenance
The Atlanta Regional Commission on Wednesday approved a plan to pull MARTA back from the financial brink with $25 million in stimulus funds.

MARTA was preparing for drastic cuts, such as shutting down all service one day a week, until ARC announced the proposal in April. A majority of MARTA's income comes from a sales tax levied in Fulton and DeKalb counties, and those revenues have shrunk along with the economy. MARTA officials said less serious cuts are still under way, including pullbacks in service.  To read more click here.

Transportation options other than taxes require study
By Rep. Bob Smith, Vice-Chair of the House Appropriations Committee
The perpetual poor mouthing by the Metro Atlanta Chamber, MARTA and the Atlanta Regional Commission about the Legislature's refusal to adopt a transportation tax increase this year sounds like a bunch of spoiled children throwing temper tantrums because they didn't get their way.

The General Assembly absolutely did the right thing by adjourning for its 2009 session without a plan to raise taxes for transportation -- either on a statewide or a regional basis. Neither proposal could have gone before the voters until 2010.  To read more click here.

DeKalb cancels plan for military school
County had planned to open public high school in partnership with U.S. Marine Corps

The DeKalb County school system has canceled its plans to open a military academy this fall.

The planned partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps was "not feasible," said system spokesman Dale Davis in a news release, but he said that the two parties would continue discussions "in hope of reaching a mutual agreement that is in the best interest of both institutions."  To read more click here.

State agencies to cut 25% in June
Gov. Sonny Perdue on Thursday said state revenues for the almost-ended fiscal year have continued to decline and that state agencies will lose a quarter of their June funding.

Perdue, in a letter to top state lawmakers, said he is being forced to lower the state revenue estimate by more than $274 million for the 2009 fiscal year that ends June 30. That is a 1.45 percent drop in the 2009 budget state lawmakers approved earlier this year.  To read more click here.
